
No. 12 Tennis Starts Season with Hawai'i Sweep

HONOLULU – The No. 12 Duke men's tennis team started its spring campaign on a strong note Wednesday, meeting the University of Hawai'i as part of the Rainbow Warrior Classic. The Blue Devils played two rounds of doubles and one round of singles against the Rainbow Warriors and won all eight doubles matches and all eight singles matches.
In the first round of doubles, Duke freshman Nicolas Alvarez and senior Raphael Hemmeler were in the No. 1 spot and defeated the Hawai'i pair of Nils Schuhmann and Carter Lam, 6-3. Senior Jason Tahir and redshirt senior Chris Mengel earned a 6-2 victory versus the Rainbow Warriors' Chas Okamoto and Felix Albert. Junior Bruno Semenzato and junior Josh Levine edged Hawai'i's Joakim Pinola and Marcel Chan, 7-6 (2). Rounding out the opening set of doubles play was sophomore TJ Pura and junior Daniel McCall with a 6-0 triumph against Fabian Woehrl and Kula Companion.
In the second round of doubles, Tahir and Mengel played in the No. 1 spot and recorded a 6-2 triumph versus Schuhmann and Lam. Alvarez and Hemmeler moved to the No. 2 slot and cruised to a 6-0 victory against Okamoto and Albert. In the No. 3 hole, Pura and McCall fought through Pinola and Chan for a 7-5 win. Semenzato and Levine completed the doubles play with a 6-2 win against Woehrl and Companion.
During the singles portion, eight Blue Devils were in action. Tahir played in the No. 1 spot and dropped the first set to Schuhmann, 4-6, before bouncing back to win next two sets, 7-6 (4) and 6-2. Alvarez earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Okamoto in the No. 2 spot while Semenzato topped Lam 7-6 (2), 6-3. Hemmeler, in the No. 4 slot, earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory versus Albert. Mengel, at No. 5, cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory versus Chan and Pura won 6-0, 6-1 against Pinola in the No. 6 spot. Levine and McCall earned straight-set victories in the No. 7 and No. 8 spots. Levine topped Woehrl 6-2, 6-0 at No. 7 and McCall downed Companion 6-2, 6-4.
Duke finishes its competition in Hawai'i at 3 p.m. Thursday against No. 39 Louisville. The format will again be two rounds of doubles and one round of singles.
