DURHAM, N.C. – Duke redshirt senior safety Jeremy Cash made it a clean sweep on Thursday, picking up his fifth national honor of the week as the Chuck Bednarik Award National Player of the Week. Earlier this week, Cash was named the Walter Camp Foundation National Defensive Player of the Week, the Football Writers Association of America National Defensive Player of the Week, the Lott IMPACT Trophy Player of the Week and the Jim Thorpe Award Player of the Week, as well as the ACC Defensive Back of the Week.
A 6-2, 210-pound native of Miami, Fla., Cash earned the numerous awards after guiding the Blue Devils to a 34-20 upset of No. 20 Georgia Tech on Saturday. He paced Duke's defense with 12 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, two caused fumbles and a program single-game record four quarterback pressures. Duke held the Yellow Jackets to 173 rushing yards, 204 below their season average (377.0), which ranked second nationally entering the week. The performance snapped Georgia Tech's streak of consecutive games with 200 or more rushing yards at 17 contests, the longest in the nation.
This season, Cash leads the Blue Devils in tackles (34), tackles for loss (8.0), sacks (1.5), caused fumbles (3) and quarterback pressures (6) as Duke ranks seventh nationally in scoring defense (11.5) and 10th nationally in total defense by surrendering 261.0 yards per week.
In August, Cash was named to the preseason watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award, an honor given annually to the top defensive player in the nation by the Maxwell Football Club.
The Bednarik Award is named in honor of Chuck Bednarik, a member of the College and Pro Football Hall of Fames who attended Penn and was an eight-time Pro Bowl selection with the Philadelphia Eagles. Past winners of the Bednarik Award include Aaron Donald (Pitt), Manti Te'o (Notre Dame), Tyran Mathieu (LSU), Patrick Peterson (LSU), Ndamukong Suh (Nebraska), Julius Peppers (North Carolina), Charles Woodson (Michigan) and Warren Sapp (Miami).
Duke improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the ACC. The Blue Devils will host Boston College on Saturday at 3:30 p.m., at Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium. Tickets are available at GoDuke.com/footballtix or by calling the Duke Athletic Ticket Office at 919-681-BLUE.
