The following is an excerpt from Paul Dehner Jr.'s feature in The Cincinnati Enquirer:
In every meeting, whether for linebackers or special teams, linebacker Chris Carter sits next to Vinny Rey. He pays such close attention to how Rey learns, Carter can joke about idiosyncrasies he spots in his notebook.
“He talks to himself in his notes,” Carter said with a smile. “He's like, 'You have to do better with this. You could have shored up on that. Good hit. Use your hands more.'”
Carter takes notes the same way. That's because when he joined the Bengals looking for the ideal path to make the team everyone pointed to No. 57. Do what he does all the time and you'll make fast friends on the coaching staff.
Rey's approach to football forged his rise from an undrafted free agent in 2010 to the nerve center of the Bengals defense this season. No longer just a special teams star, he's taken all but three defensive snaps at linebacker this season, making every call along the way.
This role was not given. It was earned. Rey doesn't flash off the iPad with his speed. At a generous list of 6-feet tall, he's undersized for the position. His college pedigree came from a Duke team that won a single game his first two seasons.
Rey found other ways to stand out from the crowd clawing for valuable roster spots.
