
Duke Starts Strong at USTA/ITA Carolina Regional

CARY, N.C. – The Duke men's tennis team began the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional with a 10-6 record. Only singles action took place Friday at the Cary Tennis Park as the Blue Devils captured five main draw victories with three of their eight players advancing to the Round of 32 in the main draw.
Leading the way on Friday were senior Josh Levine, junior TJ Pura and freshman Adrian Chamdani, who all went 2-0.
Pura was the first Blue Devil to move to the main draw Round of 32 as he earned a 7-5, 6-2 win versus Warren Bryan of UNC Greensboro in his first match. In the second round, Pura downed UNC Wilmington's Xander Veys, 6-0, 6-4. Pura takes on No. 13 seed Nick Horton of N.C. State Saturday at 9 a.m. to advance to the Round of 16.
Continuing his strong fall was Chamdani, who defeated Campbell's Gerard Sola, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 in the opening round. Chamdani faced a stiff test in his second round, taking on No. 9 seed Jordi Massalle Ferrer of Charlotte, and won 6-1, 6-3. Chamdani faces Henry Patten of UNC Asheville at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Levine cruised past UNC Greensboro's Trey Gray in the first round by a 6-4, 6-3 final. In the second contest, Levine fought past Josh Hublitz of UNC Wilmington, 7-6 (3), 7-5. Levine faces No. 5 seed Robert Kelly of North Carolina at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Levine's classmate Daniel McCall also earned an opening round win, slipping past UNC Greensboro's Will Albright, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. McCall then took on Wake Forest's Keivon Tabrizi and dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision.
Blue Devil freshman Vincent Lin began as the No. 7 seed in the draw but suffered a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 setback to South Carolina's Harison O'Keefe in the first contest. Lin then moved to the consolation bracket and earned a three-set win against USC Upstate's Ignacio Garrido. Lin dropped the first set, 6-7 (4), but rebounded with 6-3, 7-6 (2) victories in the next two sets to take the match. Lin faces Pedro Leme of Coastal Carolina at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Playing to an even record Friday was Duke freshman Jason Lapidus, who picked up a 6-1, 6-2 victory in his opening match, against Winthrop's Josh Ryan. In his second contest, Lapidus faced No. 2 seed Simon Norenius of N.C. State and fell 6-1, 6-0.
Freshman Ryan Dickerson played his first matches as a Blue Devil and went 1-1. He dropped his first match to Wofford's Haris Poric, 6-1, 6-1. Dickerson bounced back strong in the consolation bracket with a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Sam Bloom of Wake Forest. Dickerson faces USC Upstate's Ramon Simonetti at 9 a.m. Saturday in the second round of the consolation bracket.
Rounding out Duke's action Friday was sophomore Andrew DeJoy, who suffered a pair of setbacks in falling to Clemson's Austin Ansari, 6-1, 6-2, and Charlotte's Vikram Hundal, 6-1, 6-1.
In addition to the singles action Saturday, Duke will play two rounds of doubles. The Blue Devil teams will be Dickerson and Lin, Levine and McCall, Chamdani and Pura, and DeJoy and Lapidus.
