DURHAM, N.C.—Duke junior Brody Huitema headed home a Kevon Black cross with 46 seconds remaining in the first overtime to lead the Blue Devils to a 2-1 victory over 10th-ranked Elon in men's soccer action tonight at Koskinen Stadium. The win was the second straight victory over a ranked opponent for Duke.
“First of all Coach Little does a great job with this team,” said head coach John Kerr. “Elon is a tough customer and they're very talented. They pass the ball well, defend well and it was a tough game tonight. We created so many chances so we just have to be little more clinical in front of goal, but we didn't give up and we kept fighting and I was so pleased for the guys. This is a huge win for us.”
After battling to a 1-1 draw over the course of the 90 minutes of regulation, Duke (7-6-2) went up a man just two minutes into the golden goal period after a red card was issued to Elon (12-3-0). The Phoenix did well to defend down a man over the next seven minutes and even generated a dangerous counterattack of its own.
In the 99th minute Huitema and Jeremy Ebobisse checked back into the game for the Blue Devils and quickly made a difference. With the ball deep in Elon's defensive third, Black served a ball in from the left flank where Ebobisse pressured the Elon goalie and flicked it to the back post for Huitema to head home.
The goal was the fourth for Huitema in his recent stretch of scoring, while the assist from Ebobisse was his fourth of the year.
Elon controlled the run of play early in the game and scored in the 14th minute when Cooper Vandermaas-Peeler perfectly placed a touch from James Brace past a diving Mitch Kupstas for the 1-0 lead.
Much like Duke has done all year after falling behind, the Blue Devils picked up their play and ran at the Phoenix defense and registered the equalizer in the 21st minute. Sophomore Brian White, in nearly identical fashion of what proved to be the game-winning score, headed home a cross from the right side after Ebobisse disrupted the Elon goalie. The tally was the fourth for White and Manley's third assist.
With their confidence riding high, Duke continued to press forward in search of the go-ahead score. Zach Mathers nearly made it 2-1 in the 29th minute as his shot skipped just past the near post and the teams headed into halftime knotted at 1-1.
The Blue Devils controlled the run of play throughout much of the opening 20 minutes of the second half. Ebobisse caught the post after turning on his defender and Mathers struck the same post on a beautiful free kick from distance to keep the game tied.
Resilient, Elon started to gain more possession as the half continued, but steady defending from the Blue Devils' backline kept the Phoenix from generating any truly dangerous chances as they headed into the thrilling overtime period.
Both teams finished with 12 shots apiece, while Duke had an 8-7 edge in corner kicks. Mitch Kupstas had two saves in the victory and Matthew Jegier had one for Elon.
Duke closes out its road schedule Saturday night at Pittsburgh. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The Blue Devils return home for their final two games Oct. 27 and Oct. 30.
