DURHAM, N.C.—Duke sophomore Brian White headed home the game winner 3:20 into the first overtime to lift the Blue Devils to a 1-0 victory over visiting Jacksonville in non-conference men's soccer action this evening. The win is the fourth straight for the Blue Devils.
Duke (9-6-2), after outshooting Jacksonville 17-6 in regulation, needed just over three minutes into overtime to come up with the win. Putting relentless pressure on the Jacksonville (3-11-1) defense in the early minutes of the period, the Blue Devils earn a corner kick from the left side.
Senior captain Zach Mathers stepped up and sent his cross to the near post where White headed it to back post past the Jacksonville keeper for the win. The tally was his sixth of the year and was Mathers' sixth assist.
“[Zach] always takes corners from that corner and that's my run to the near post,” White said. “We just kind of made eye contact and that's when I knew he was going to play it to me so I made a hard run to the near post and he put it right on my head.”
In goal for Duke, Mitch Kupstas recorded his second straight shutout with a pair of saves, including a crucial one-on-one stop late in the second half.
The Blue Devils controlled the run of play throughout, but struggled at times in creating quality scoring opportunities. While Duke had nine shots in the first half, none came on frame to test Dolphin keeper Marc Meny.
Duke, while it was able to get better looks in the second half, was unable to connect. Freshman midfield Ciaran McKenna had a couple of great efforts from distance that Meny knocked over the bar. Redshirt senior Jared Rist and sophomore Jeremy Ebobisse also had excellent chances that were saved or just missed as the two teams headed to overtime.
“We didn't take advantage of all of our chance,” White said. “Everyone had shots that went off frame that we should have put on goal. I think we were a little lax all together, but we got the win and ultimately that's what's important.”
The game nearly ended just over two minutes in when Mathers got free inside the 18-yard box. The Keller, Texas native took a look at goal and put a little too much power behind it and it sailed over the crossbar.
Less than a minute later, however, it was Mathers serving the ball to White for the winner. The overtime win is the third for the Blue Devils this season and second straight at home.
Duke, a winner of four straight, looks to make it five Friday night in the regular season finale against ACC foe Virginia Tech. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium.
