DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke women's cross country team travels to Tallahassee, Fla., for the 38th running of the ACC Championship Friday, Oct. 30. The women's six-kilometer contest, set to take place at the Apalachee Regional Park, begins at 9:45 a.m., with live coverage of the event on ESPN3.
“As a team, the Pre-Nationals meet two weeks ago was the best team effort to date, where all seven girls that we raced set a six-kilometer personal record,” head coach Christine Engel said. “That's definitely a nice feeling heading into ACCs. I'm a big believer in momentum. The girls are feeling good and we feel confident as we head into ACCs this weekend.”
Duke sends a seven-competitor squad that includes a combination of experience and youth, with two seniors, one junior and four freshmen competing Friday morning for the Blue Devils.
Two Duke entrants from last year's conference championship, senior Anima Banks and junior Madison Granger are once again scheduled to represent the Blue Devils this year. Banks returns to the ACC Championships for the third time in her career, while Granger makes her second appearance at the meet. The duo has consistently served as Duke's top finishers this season. Granger has crossed the line as the top Blue Devil in all of her last three appearances, including a third-place finish at the adidas XC Challenge. Banks finished among the top three Blue Devils in each of the last three competitions as well, posting a top-10 finish at the adidas XC Challenge.
Senior Olivia Anderson also provides veteran experience at the conference championship, competing at the same competition in 2012 as a freshman. This season, Anderson has twice placed as Duke's fifth finisher, including at the Pre-Nationals Invitational and the Princeton Inter-Regional Meet, while also crossing the line as Duke's fourth finisher at the adidas XC Challenge and the team's third finisher at the season-opening Duke Alumni Meet.
The foursome of freshmen that Duke sends to Tallahassee includes Kim Hallowes, Liz Lansing, Gabrielle Richichi and Sheridan Wilbur. All four are coming off strong showings, as each set a personal record for six-kilometers at the Pre-Nationals Invitational. Wilbur dropped nearly 34 seconds from her previous best, clocking a time of 21:14.7 to cross the line as Duke's third finisher in Louisville, Ky., Oct. 17. Lansing finished 15 seconds behind Wilbur to set a personal record of her own, improving her previous best six-kilometer time by one minute and 15 seconds. Lansing is slated to compete for just the third time this season.
Richichi also successfully dipped under the 22-minute mark in her most recent race, clocking a time of 21:59.5 at the Pre-National Invitational. The New Fairfield, Conn., native has toed the line four times for Duke this fall. Hallowes rounds out the freshman contingent competing Friday. Hallowes helped Duke earn a second-place finish at the adidas XC Challenge after placing 18th overall and heads into the ACC Championships with a six-kilometer personal best of 22:03.3, registered at the Pre-National Invitational.
