PRINCETON, N.J. -- Redshirt senior Shaun Thompson, competing against stout competition and blustery winds, earned his first victory of the 2015 cross country season, while also pacing the Blue Devils to a sixth-place finish at the Princeton Inter-Regional Meet in Princeton, N.J., Saturday morning. Thompson, who clocked an eight-kilometer time of 23:34.9, finished over 30 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Thomas Curtin of Virginia Tech.
“We got out really well,” head coach Norm Ogilvie said. “The kids were running really well. We were well positioned. We just came up short over the last mile, but I was very pleased with how the guys reversed the trend of how we weren't aggressive last year. We were definitely aggressive. We were beating some pretty good teams. We can walk away from this one feeling pretty good about it.”
No. 19 Indiana took the win with 47 points, while Princeton (70), Columbia (84), Virginia Tech (105), and No. 24 Providence (111) rounded out the top five. Duke, with 148 points, improved to 6-5 overall and 2-1 against ACC foes after finishing ahead of No. 29 North Carolina (173) and Wake Forest (291).
Even after falling at the start line, Thompson asserted himself early in the race and never relinquished the lead after overtaking the field in the first half mile of the contest. The Baldwinsville, N.Y., native averaged 4:44 per mile, hitting the first mile at 4:39, the two mile at 9:18, the three-mile mark at 14:06, the four mile at 18:59 and finishing with a 4:35 mile to cross the line in 23:34.9.
All seven of Duke's top finishers dipped under the 25-minute mark in the race. Sophomore Alec Kunzweiler also posted a strong showing for the Blue Devils, registering his first sub-25 minute eight-kilometer time after crossing the finish in 24:33.4 for 33rd place. Junior Daniel Moore and Blake Udland remained in a tight pack along with Kunzweiler through the finish, recording times of 24:34.3 and 24:38.4, and placing 34th and 37th, respectively. Freshman Stephen Garrett registered a time of 24:46.7 en route to a 45th-place finish, the best showing of his young college career, while Jordan Burton (49th) and sophomore Stephen Shine (52nd) rounded out Duke's top seven, with times of 24:49.9 and 24:50.4.
The Blue Devils return to competition Friday, Oct. 9, traveling to Charlotte, N.C., for the Royals Challenge.
