TULSA, Okla. – Duke sophomore Nicolas Alvarez opened the Saint Francis ITA All-American Championships Main Draw with a hard fought three-set victory against Joao Monteiro of Virginia Tech, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
It was a tight contest throughout each set with neither player leading by more than two games until the final point of the match. The two exchanged service breaks in the first set and were tied 3-3 before Monteiro took a 4-3 lead. Alvarez held serve and then broke Monteiro before closing out the set.
In the second set, Alvarez took a 2-0 lead before Monteiro again fought back and evened the set at 3-3 and 4-4. Monteiro then took the final two games to capture the set. The third set started much the same as the first two and was even at 3-3. From there, Alvarez took the final three games to win the match.
Alvarez returns to action Friday against Illinois' Aron Hiltzik.
