CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The Duke women's cross country team raced to a 10th-place finish Friday afternoon at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships, held on the Panorama Farms in Charlottesville, Va. The Blue Devils compiled 294 points in the team's final meet of the 2015 cross country season.
“Olivia [Anderson] ran well,” head coach Christine Engel said. “There's definitely been some obstacles and adversity the week leading up to ACCs and these past couple weeks with injuries and illness. It's not where I think we're capable of finishing as a program.”
Sixth-ranked Virginia won the team competition with 53 points, while No. 8 NC State placed second with 74 points. No. 28 North Carolina took third with 100 points, followed by No. 22 William & Mary (187) in fourth and Eastern Kentucky (241) rounding out the top five.
Senior Olivia Anderson, coming off a personal-best performance at the conference championships two weeks earlier, paced the Duke squad, finishing 43rd overall in a six-kilometer time of 22:07.6. Anderson used the final four kilometers to move up six positions before earning her final placing. Anderson, competing in the first regional championships of her college career, concluded a strong campaign that saw the Greenwood Village, Colo., native register two personal-best times and compete in a career-high six contests in 2015.
Two of Duke's top performers throughout the season, Anima Banks, a senior out of Mamaroneck, N.Y., and Madison Granger, a junior out of Belchertown, Mass., once again placed among Duke's top performers Friday. Banks finished second on the team and 50th overall with a time of 22:19.3, while Granger's time of 22:26.0 earned her a 58th-place finish.
A trio of Duke freshmen, including Sheridan Wilbur, Gabrielle Richichi and Kim Hallowes, also saw action Friday, marking the first regional championship competition of each student-athlete's college career. Wilbur closed out her first season as a Blue Devil with a 60th-place finish after running a time of 22:27.3, while Richichi broke into the top 100 with a 92nd-place showing. The New Fairfield, Conn., native slipped under the 23-minute mark, clocking a time of 22:58.0. Hallowes wrapped up Duke's team scoring, finishing 207th in the final cross country race of her freshman season.
“We're going to take a little bit of downtime to let the injuries and sicknesses heal up,” Engel said. “Then we'll start getting ready for track season, with the first meet two months away. I'm happy with the direction the culture of the team is going. The chemistry of the team is really good, compared to where we were a year ago. It doesn't necessarily show in some of the outcomes and results, but I feel like we're going in a positive direction, and we're excited for things to turn around.”
