FLUSHING, N.Y. – Sophomore Nicolas Alvarez ended his fall campaign with a setback in the consolation bracket of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship.
Alvarez suffered a 6-3, 6-4 defeat to Indiana's Sam Monette. In the opening set, Monette jumped out to a 3-0 advantage before Alvarez answered with a 3-1 run to cut the deficit to one game at 4-3. Monette, however, responded and won the last two games to take the set.
In the second set, Alvarez captured the first game before Monette strung together three straight wins to take a 3-1 lead. Alvarez rallied again by taking two of the next three games to face a 4-3 deficit. Monette then took a 5-4 advantage and held his serve in the final game to end the match.
Alvarez finishes the fall with a 4-4 record with seven of his eight matches coming against ranked foes.
The Blue Devils return to action in January for their dual match season.
