RIVIERA MAYA, Mexico – Led by sophomore Azurá Stevens' fourth straight double-double, the 15th-ranked Duke women's basketball team downed Idaho, 74-68, Thursday afternoon to open the Cancun Challenge at the Hard Rock Hotel in Riviera Maya, Mexico.
The Blue Devils move to 4-1 on the season, while the Vandals suffered their first loss of the season falling to 3-1. Duke will next play Iowa State Friday, Nov. 27 at 1:30 p.m., in the second of three games in the Cancun Challenge.
Stevens finished the game with a game-high 22-points and 12 rebounds, while blocking three shots. She hit 11-of-17 field goals in 33 minutes. Freshman Crystal Primm came off the bench to collect a career-high 13 points and six rebounds in 28 minutes.
Duke opened the game struggling from the field and trailed 9-7 almost five minutes into the contest. The Blue Devils were ignited by two straight three-pointers by Greenwell and went on to lead 18-11 at the end of the first quarter.
After the Vandals cut the Blue Devil lead to 23-21 at the 5:47 mark of the second quarter, Stevens scored eight consecutive points and put the Blue Devils ahead by 10 points, 31-21, with under four minutes to play in the half. Freshman Haley Gorecki added a late three-pointer and Duke took a 36-27 lead into the half.
Stevens paced the Blue Devils with 12 points and six rebounds, while Greenwell added eight. A native of Raleigh, N.C., Stevens totaled double-digit scoring for the 20th straight contest.
Duke built a lead as big as 19 points in the third period, before Idaho started draining three-pointers to cut the advantage to eight, 57-49, heading into the final 10 minutes of action.
The Blue Devils brought the lead back to 11, 65-54, with 6:07 remaining, but the Vandals wouldn't quit as they outscored Duke 7-0 to cut the lead to four, 65-51. Duke hit its free throws on the way in to close with its fourth win of the season.
Making her first collegiate start, freshman Angela Salvadores finished with six points, six assists, six rebounds and three steals in 29 minutes. Redshirt sophomore Rebecca Greenwell added 17 points as she drained three treys. Junior Kendall Cooper added a season-high 10 rebounds, five points, three blocks and three steals in 24 minutes.
The Blue Devils finished the contest with a season-high 26 turnovers and hit 46.8 percent from the field. The Vandals, who averaged 12.3 three-pointers entering the game, hit 10 from downtown.
