
Blue Devils Take Eight at Wake Forest Invite

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Duke men's tennis team opened its final weekend of full team competition with eight victories at the Wake Forest Invite.
Eight of the nine Blue Devils participating this weekend were in singles. Seniors Daniel McCall and Josh Levine, along with freshman Jason Lapidus, were the lone first-match winners of the day. McCall downed Penn's Austin Kaplan 7-5, 6-1 in the B1 flight while Levine topped Davidson's Shamael Chaudhry 7-5, 7-6 (5) in the B2 flight and Lapidus was a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 winner against Norfolk State's Flavian Fernandez in flight C1.
McCall fell to Virginia's Jonathan Cornish 6-4, 6-2 in the second round. McCall will take on Tennessee Tech's Guillermo Nicolas Saturday. Levine is the lone Blue Devil still in the winner's bracket, coming off a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory against UNC Greensboro's Danny Mack. Levine takes on Wisconsin's Alexander Kokorev in Saturday's semifinals. Lapidus fell to Virginia Tech's Fred Mesmer 6-3, 6-2 in the second round. Lapidus will take on Gerald Sola of Campbell on Saturday.
Going 1-1 on the day after dropping their first matches were freshman Vincent Lin and junior TJ Pura in the A1 flight. Lin fell 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 to Edu Mena of Tennessee Tech while Pura was bested 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 by Wisconsin's Josef Dodridge. In the consolation bracket, Lin picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Penn's Zach Lessen. Lin will take on No. 1 seed Romain Bogaerts of Wake Forest on Saturday in the consolation semifinals of the A1 flight. Pura also rebounded with a 7-5, 6-4 triumph over the Demon Deacons' Sam Bloom. Pura and Georgia Southern's Rise Lanne will square off Saturday in the consolation semifinals.
Like Lin and Pura, freshman Ryan Dickerson played to a 1-1 day with an opening round 7-5, 6-3 setback in the A2 flight to UNC Greensboro's Connor Thompson. Dickerson then defeated Janken Thoen of Radford, 6-2, 6-2. Dickerson and Wofford's Haris Poric will play in the consolation semifinals on Saturday.
Losing both their singles matches Friday were freshman Adrian Chamdani and sophomore Andrew DeJoy. Chamdani was topped by Georgia State's Jannis Koeke 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 and Old Dominian's Adam Moundir, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. Chamdani will face East Carolina's Kase Countee on Saturday. DeJoy dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to Nikhil Mannepalli of Radford and then fell 6-0, 6-4 to Georgia State's Chimay Handa. DeJoy will play N.C. State's Michael Odgen on Saturday.
In the A2 flight of doubles, the No. 2 seeded team of Lin and freshman Catalin Mateas suffered an 8-3 setback to Wofford's Alan Poric and Haris Poric in the opening match. The two will face UNC Greensboro's William Albright and Warren Bryan in the consolation bracket Saturday. McCall and Chamdani paired up in the same flight and earned an 8-4 victory against Penn's Vim De Alwis and Kaplan. McCall and Chamdani are set to face Kentucky's Nils Ellefsen and Kevin Lai on Saturday.
The B1 doubles flight featured Pura and Lapidus, who won 8-3 versus Campbell's Sola and Giorgi Datashvilli. On Saturday, Pura and Lapidus will face UNC Greensboro's Thompson and Mack.
Rounding out the Blue Devils in doubles were Dickerson and Levine in B3 doubles as the pair suffered an 8-7 (5) setback to Sebastian Acuna and Andri Andrukhov of Georgia State. Dickerson and Levine take on Davidson's Artem Khrapko and Jack Riazzi on Saturday.
