DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University women's golfer
Leona Maguire has been invited to attend a Curtis Cup familiarization session Dec. 18-19 at the Dun Laoghaire Golf Club in Ireland. The Duke sophomore will be one of eight golfers to attend the practice session with the Great Britain & Ireland squad.
Maguire, who hails from Cavan, Ireland, is currently the top-ranked golfer in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. The 2015 WGCA & ANNIKA Award winner as the National Player of the Year, Maguire continues to make her impact on the college golf scene. She is listed No. 2 in the latest Golfweek Collegiate Individual rankings, after turning in a 70.67 stroke average along with one victory and three top 10 finishes in three tournaments in the fall.
The official Great Britain & Ireland team of eight will be announced Thursday, April 28, 2016. Six automatic selections will come from the top four Great Britain & Ireland players in the world golf rankings and the top two in the Ladies' Golf Union Order of Merit. The final two spots will be chosen by a selection panel.
Other golfers invited to the session were Gemma Clews, Alice Hewson, Meghan MacLauren, Olivia Mehaffey, Inci Mehmet, Rochelle Morris and Chloe Williams. Bronte Law and Charlotte Thomas were invited but are unavailable.
The 2016 Curtis Cup will take place June 10-12 at the Dun Laoghaire Golf Club.
