DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore Azurá Stevens registered her seventh double-double of the season to lead the 12th-ranked Duke Blue Devils past the Western Carolina Catamounts Tuesday night in Cameron Indoor Stadium, 84-47. The victory moves the Blue Devils' record to 10-3, while the Catamounts drop to 3-9 on the year.
Stevens finished with 21 points on 9-of-13 (.692) shooting while hauling in 10 rebounds to go with three assists and three blocks. Joining the Raleigh, N.C., product in double-figures were redshirt sophomore Rebecca Greenwell and junior Oderah Chidom with 13 each, while freshman Faith Suggs poured in a career-high eight points, all in the second half.
The home team came out firing on all cylinders, establishing a 25-11 lead at the end of the first period. Duke featured a balanced scoring attack during the opening quarter as Chidom, Greenwell and freshman Haley Gorecki all chipped in five points. The Blue Devils finished 9-of-12 (.750) from the floor while making the most of its time at the charity stripe, converting all six free throw attempts. Not to be outdone on the defensive end, the Blue Devils limited Western Carolina to just 4-of-13 (.308) shooting while recording five steals.
Stevens came alive in the second quarter, scoring seven of her 11 first-half points in the period, but Western Carolina found its offensive rhythm to keep Duke's lead at 40-27 heading to the locker room. Inside scoring was key to Duke's success during the first 20 minutes, outscoring the Catamounts 28-10 in the paint while holding a 23-11 rebounding advantage. Stevens and Chidom combined to account for 20 of Duke's points on 9-of-14 (.643) shooting in the first half while pulling down seven and four boards, respectively.
Coming out of the break, Duke quickly reclaimed the momentum, using a pair of 9-0 runs, including a personal 5-0 run from Suggs in the final minute of the quarter, to put the game out of reach with a 62-37 lead heading into the fourth. The Blue Devils matched their offensive output from the first quarter by shooting an identical 9-of-12 (.750) from the field in the third period, compared to a 3-of-17 (.176) shooting performance from the Catamounts. The Blue Devils kept it rolling in the final period, outscoring Western Carolina 22-10 in the quarter to cement the victory.
The Blue Devils will return to Cameron New Year's Eve for a matchup against the UNCW Seahawks at 2 p.m. The contest will be aired on BDN+.
