DURHAM, N.C. -- The fourth annual PAWS for Exams was a great success as Duke student-athletes took a pause from studying for exams on the last day of the fall reading period to relax with Beau, Dugan, Izzie and Aspen, four locally registered therapy dogs. PAWS for Exams created for Duke student-athletes to interact with registered therapy dogs in a stress-free and relaxed environment. Studies have shown that petting a friendly dog helps lower blood pressure, slows the heart rate down and releases tension in the muscles.
Over 100 Duke student-athletes from the various varsity sports athletic teams visited Beau, Dugan, Izzie and Aspen in Scharf Hall at Duke University on Monday, December 7th, 2015. During the stressful time before exams start therapy dogs can represent a release for Duke student-athletes, who enjoy the companionship of dogs. Duke students are not allowed to have a pet on campus so PAWS for Exams is one of the few times during the year they get to interact with pets in a carefree environment.
PAWS for Exams began in 2012 and was created to give Duke student-athletes the opportunity to interact with registered therapy dogs in a relaxed environment to relieve the stress created by exams and final papers. PAWS for Exams was a great success and we are thankful to Stacey Gibbs, Vera and Jim Shanley, and Lisa Wells for their efforts in contributing to the welfare of Duke student- athletes.
