DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University senior men's tennis player Raphael Hemmeler was selected as this week's Ronald McDonald House Charities Duke Student-Athlete of the Week after helping the Blue Devils to a 3-0 weekend with three singles wins.
Hemmeler's three singles wins over the weekend pushed his career singles victory total to 101, making him the 14th Duke player to reach the 100-singles win plateau. He is also the fifth player in program history to reach 100 wins in doubles and 100 victories in singles.
Against No. 20 Tennessee on Friday, No. 103 Hemmeler defeated Jack Schipanski 6-2, 6-3. After being tied 1-1 in the opening set, Hemmeler earned a break and won five of the next six games. In the second set, Hemmeler trailed 3-1 before coming back and winning three straight games to take a 4-3 lead. He then broke Schipanski for a 5-3 lead and served out the set for the victory. The win snapped a 2-2 overall tie in the match and the put the Blue Devils ahead for good.
Sunday against No. 47 Michigan, Hemmeler extended Duke's lead to 2-0 and earned his 100th victory with ease, cruising past No. 100 Alex Knight 6-1, 6-3. Hemmeler joins Henrique Cunha (2010-13), Doug Root (1997-2000), Reid Carleton (2008-11) and current head coach Ramsey Smith (1998-2001) as the only Blue Devils in the 100-100 club.
In Sunday's second match against N.C. Central, Hemmeler played in the No. 1 singles spot for the first time in his career and eased past Kert Kilumets, 6-3, 6-2.
As a team, Duke's three victories pushed the Blue Devils' record to 9-0, good for the second-best start in program history. The only Duke squad that was better was the 1933-34 squad, which ended the year 12-0.
Hemmeler and the Blue Devils return to action Friday at the ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship in Chicago.
