DURHAM, N.C. – After opening the season at the Carolina Relays with eight first-place performances, the Duke track and field teams will continue their outdoor season at the adidas Raleigh Relays March 27-28, hosted by NC State at Paul Derr Track.
Following his winning performances in both the men's shot put and discus last weekend at the Carolina Relays, redshirt junior Stephen Boals leads a strong group of throwers on day one. Boals will again compete in both events. His shot put mark of 57-5.75 (17.52) last Friday currently ranks 25th in NCAA Division I this season. Also slated to throw the discus will be junior Michael Foley, who took fourth at the Carolina Relays with a toss of 142-6.00 (43.44).
For the Duke women throwers, redshirt sophomore Urina Harrell is slated to compete in the shot put, and graduate student Erica Brand will throw the discus. Harrell and Brand each placed second in their respective events last weekend at the Carolina Relays, with Harrell taking runner-up honors with a throw of 45-7.25 (13.90) in the shot put and Brand finishing second with a toss of 160-10.00 (49.03), currently ranking 32nd-best in the nation entering the weekend.
In the high jump events, junior Maddie Morrow will compete for the Duke women, while junior Carl Heinz and freshmen Andrew Pancoast and Colt Sessions are slated to jump for the men. Morrow kicked off her 2015 outdoor season with a win at the Carolina Relays, currently ranking 36th in the country this year with a leap of 5-7.00 (1.70).
A pair of sophomores will represent Duke in the long jump events. Karly Gregory and Grant Emrie each opened the season with third-place finishes at the Carolina Relays, with Gregory leaping 17-9.75 (5.43) for the women and Emrie notching a jump of 21-10.00 (6.65) for the men.
Rounding out the first day of field events for Duke, sophomore Connor Hall will compete in the men's pole vault. A native of San Luis Obispo, Calif., Hall took 10th at last season's ACC Outdoor Championships with a vault of 16-0.75 (4.90).
On the track, five Blue Devil women are slated to run the 5,000 throughout the day, including graduate student Jessie Rubin, seniors Chloe Maleski and Julianna Miller, junior Madison Granger and freshman Callie Wynn. The men's races will feature four Blue Devils. Graduate student Max Robinson, who spent his undergraduate career at Johns Hopkins, will compete for the first time as a Blue Devil, along with the junior trio of Eddie Merenda, William Rooney and Blake Udland.
Another large group of Blue Devils will compete in the men's and women's 1,500 races. Running for the women will be juniors Anima Banks and Allison Sturges and sophomores Haley Meier, Hannah Meier and Gina Daniel. For the men, seniors Henry Farley and Brian Schoepfer will be joined by sophomore Stephen Shine and freshman Sean Kelly.
In the sprints, junior Christian Vail will be the lone Blue Devil on the men's side, running the 400. Vail clocked a time of 50.91 at last weekend's Carolina Relays to take sixth place in the event. For the women, graduate student Dorehn Coleman and freshman Jasmine Hill will run the 100 after placing fifth and seventh, respectively, at the Carolina Relays. Coleman will return to the track later to team up with seniors Alexis Roper, Callie Francis and Jessica Buttinger in the sprint medley relay.
Competing Saturday, junior pole vaulter Megan Clark enters the weekend with the top mark this season in the women's pole vault. Her clearance of 14-3.25 (4.35) not only won her the event at the Carolina Relays, but also garnered her ACC Women's Field Performer of the Week honors. Clark will vault alongside freshman teammate Madison Heath, who placed fifth last weekend with a height of 12-3.50 (3.75).
Foley will attempt to finish first in the men's hammer throw for a second consecutive week. Duke's record holder with a personal-best throw of 189-4.00 (57.72), Foley won the event at the Carolina Relays with a mark of 175-11.00 (53.62). In the women's event, senior Stephanie Skove will look to build off her season-opening performance, taking third with a personal-best throw of 154-6.00 (47.09), the fifth-farthest mark in school history.
Javelin throwers Thomas Lang and Christine Streisel will each look to add another first-place finish to their 2015 resumes after winning the events last weekend. Lang, a redshirt junior and a 2014 All-American and ACC Champion in the javelin, secured a victory in the men's competition last Friday with a throw of 217-6.00 (66.30), which currently ranks 20th nationally. Streisel, a sophomore, produced a winning mark of 155-8.00 (47.55) on the women's side that ranks 21st this season in NCAA Division I. Lang will be joined by freshman Travis Closs, while Streisel will compete alongside graduate student Shannon Sullivan and sophomore Kendall Gustafson. Sullivan finished right behind Streisel at the Carolina Relays, notching a mark of 132-7.00 (40.42) to place second.
Representing the Blue Devils in the men's triple jump will be graduate student Alex Jebb. During the indoor season, Jebb notched a personal-best leap of 46-11.75 (14.32) to rank second all-time at Duke.
In Saturday's running events, Duke will feature two individuals and five relays. Haley Meier will run the 800 for the Blue Devil women, while junior Matthew Rodio will compete in the 400 hurdles. Rodio, a native of Oceanport, N.J., opened the outdoor season with a time of 56.98 to take sixth in the event last weekend.
Duke will field two relays on the men's side, with freshman Matt Luppino, Kelly, Farley and Schoepfer teaming up for the 4x1,500 and sophomores Alec Kunzweiler and Dylan Murphy and freshmen Kyle Francis and Jordan Burton running the 4x800.
For the women, the squad of Roper, Coleman, Hill and Francis will compete in the 4x200, while Duke will enter two teams in the 4x800. Senior Abby Farley, Buttinger, Francis and Sturges will field one team, while the second group will consist of graduate student Henrietta Miers, junior Olivia Anderson, Daniel and a fourth member to be determined.
The meet will start Friday morning with the first sections of the women's 5,000 at 9:30 a.m., followed by field events beginning at 10 a.m. A live stream of the event will be available on flotrack.com.
