DURHAM, N.C. – For the first time in ACC history, Duke University women's basketball senior
Elizabeth Williams was named Associated Press All-America for the fourth straight year Tuesday, after a vote of 35 Associated Press media members.
Williams earned second team accolades in 2014-15, after receiving third team honors each of her first three years. A native of Virginia Beach, Va., Williams is the first ACC player to receive AP honors each of her four years and just the eighth overall player since 1995 to earn the award four times.
Other four-time Associated Press All-America selections include Brittney Griner (Baylor), Maya Moore (UConn), Courtney Paris (Oklahoma), Candice Wiggins (Stanford), Seimone Augustus (LSU), Tamika Catchings (Tennessee) and Chamique Holdsclaw (Tennessee).
The 6-3 center averaged 14.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 3.0 blocks per contest as the Blue Devils advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 in Spokane, Wash. She posted a career-best 10 double-doubles on the season and scored 20 or more points five times. Williams led the ACC and is tied for 12th nationally with her 3.0 blocks per game average.
On the AP first team was Jewell Loyd (Notre Dame), Breanna Stewart (UConn), Tiffany Mitchell (South Carolina), Nina Davis (Baylor) and Amanda Zahui B. (Minnesota). Listed on the second team with Williams was Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis (UConn), Kelsey Mitchell (Ohio State), Moriah Jefferson (UConn) and Brittany Boyd (California).
One of the top shot-blockers in NCAA history, Williams finished her career with 426 swats to rank ninth all-time and was eight blocks away from tying the ACC career mark. A four-time ACC Defensive Player of the Year, Williams also finished her standout career with 44 NCAA Tournament blocks to rank fifth.
Williams is the first Duke player to earn All-America accolades in each of her four years, is one of 12 finalists for the Wade Trophy and is listed on the final ballot for the John R. Wooden Award. She also joined former Blue Devil Alana Beard as the only four-time All-ACC First Team selections in conference history.
Lexie Brown (Maryland), Samantha Logic (Iowa), Jillian Alleyne (Oregon), A'ja Wilson (South Carolina), Ruth Hamblin (Oregon State) and Reshanda Gray (California) were listed on the AP third team.
Williams also received United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) All-America honors Tuesday along with Davis (Baylor), Jefferson (UConn), Logic (Iowa), Loyd (Notre Dame), Kelsey Mitchell (Ohio State), Tiffany Mitchell (South Carolina), Mosqueda-Lewis (UConn), Stewart (UConn) and Zahiu B. (Minnesota).
Duke totaled a 23-11 overall record on the season, before falling to Maryland in the NCAA Sweet 16. The Blue Devils boasted a No. 14 ranked RPI nationally and advanced to the NCAA regionals for the 16th time in school history.
Williams is expected to be one of the top selections in the upcoming April 16 WNBA Draft at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The action will kick off at 7:00 p.m., on ESPN2.
