DURHAM, N.C. – Two Blue Devil freshmen have been selected to represent Duke in individual events at the 2015 NCAA Women's Division I Swimming and Diving Championships March 19-21 in Greensboro, N.C., as announced by the NCAA Wednesday.
Leah Goldman is qualified to compete in the 100-yard butterfly after clocking 52.28 for a school record and podium finish two weeks ago at the ACC Championship in Atlanta. Goldman was just the second female swimmer to garner All-ACC honors as a freshman during head coach Dan Colella's tenure at Duke. Her time of 52.28 places her 21st out of 40 invited swimmers on the event psych sheet.
During her rookie season, the Burlingame, Calif., native also surpassed the NCAA provisional time standards in the 100 freestyle (49.53), 100 backstroke (55.01) and the 200 IM (1:58.60).
Isabella Paez will join Goldman in Greensboro after qualifying for the NCAA Championships field in the 200 butterfly. Her mark of 1:56.92, set at last weekend's Bulldog Last Chance Meet in Athens, Ga., broke her own school record and ranks her 39th heading into the NCAA meet. Paez, who hails from Medley, Fla., took ninth in the 200 butterfly at the ACC Championship, displaying great speed in the final 50 yards to win the consolation final.
Paez also posted an NCAA 'B' cut in the 100 butterfly (53.97) at the conference championship.
The 100 butterfly trials and finals are slated for Friday, March 20, followed by the 200 butterfly on Saturday, March 21. All preliminaries sessions will begin at 11 a.m. while event finals will be held each evening at 7 p.m.
