GREENSBORO, N.C. – Former Duke diver Abby Johnston captured a second title Sunday on the final day of the USA Diving Synchronized National Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Johnston teamed with Laura Ryan to take home first in the women's synchronized 3-meter event. The duo won a national title in the event together for the second time, leading the field by 15.9 points after preliminaries and extending their lead in the finals. All three of Johnston and Ryan's optional dives received more than 70 points, while their best dive came in the fourth round, an inward 2 ½ pike that was awarded 75.60 points. They finished with 626.40 points over their two lists of dives.
“Today went really well. The score for our optionals on our second list was one of our highest ever, so that was a good showing for us and gives us a lot of confidence going into World Championships,” Johnston said.
With their first-place finish, Johnston and Ryan qualified for the 2015 FINA World Championships, which will be held this summer in Kazan, Russia. Johnston also earned a berth to the World Championships in the mixed gender synchronized 3-meter after winning the event in Greensboro with Jordan Windle on Thursday.
