Blue Devils Prepped for VertKlasse Meeting

DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke track and field teams will make the short trip west to High Point, N.C., to run at the seventh annual VertKlasse Meeting April 3-4. The meet is hosted by High Point University at Dick Vert Stadium.

After the first two weeks of the outdoor season, the Blue Devils have notched 16 automatic qualifying marks for the ACC Outdoor Championships. On the men's team, Blake Udland (5,000m – 14:22.34), Alex Jebb (triple jump – 14.17m), Stephen Boals (shot put – 17.52m; discus throw – 50.50m), Michael Foley (hammer throw - 53.62m), Thomas Lang (javelin throw – 66.30m) and Travis Closs (javelin throw – 54.58m) have each earned invitations to the conference meet. For the women, Haley Meier (1,500m – 4:23.83), Anima Banks (1,500m - 4:26.35), Madison Granger (5,000m – 16:35.40), Megan Clark (pole vault – 4.35m), Madison Heath (pole vault – 3.75m), Urina Harrell (shot put – 13.90m), Erica Brand (discus throw – 49.14m), Christine Streisel (javelin throw – 47.44m) and Shannon Sullivan (javelin throw – 40.42m) have all qualified.

Competing last weekend at the Raleigh Relays, the Blue Devils produced another strong team outing. In the relay races, four Duke units placed in the top two, led by the men's 4x800 team of Alec Kunzweiler, Henry Farley, Kyle Francis and Jordan Burton finishing first with a time of 7:36.70. Duke's men's 4x1,500, women's 4x800 and women's sprint medley relay squads each took runner-up honors. The Blue Devil throwers also turned in a fantastic day, with Lang taking second in the men's javelin and Boals in the men's shot put, Brand in the women's discus and Streisel in women's javelin all notching third-place performances. In the triple jump, Jebb etched his name in the Duke record books, registering a leap of 46-6.00 (14.17m) to rank fourth all-time in school history. On the track, the Blue Devils were led by the women's 1,500m duo of Haley Meier and Banks, placing second and fifth, respectively.

Friday's session of the VertKlasse Meeting will begin at 12:30 p.m. with the women's javelin and men's shot put, followed by running events starting with the men's 3,000m steeplechase at 3:30 p.m. Saturday will kick off with the men's 800m race at 9:30 a.m., while field events are scheduled to begin at 9:45 a.m. with men's hammer throw.
