DURHAM, N.C. – Senior Ester Goldfeld, a member of Duke's 23rd-ranked women's tennis team, has been selected to participate in this year's NCAA singles competition, the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Subcommittee announced Wednesday. The doubles tandem of junior Beatrice Capra and freshman Samantha Harris was also selected as an alternate team for the 2015 NCAA doubles competition. The announcement comes one day after the Blue Devils received an at-large bid to the NCAA team tournament.
Goldfeld, who received an at-large bid for this year's competition, has consistently ranked among the top half of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) nationally ranked singles players. Goldfeld currently ranks 39th in the latest ITA poll, headlining the Blue Devil contingent.
With 25 singles wins this season, Goldfeld leads the Blue Devils in victories for the second consecutive year. Goldfeld has posted strong play at the No. 2 position in 2015, compiling a 10-5 mark on court two. Her 10 victories nearly matches her career high of 11 victories at the No. 2 position, which she reached last season. Goldfeld also competed in seven matches on court one, earning five wins on the first court.
During last season's NCAA singles competition, Goldfeld advanced through to the semifinal round before falling to Virginia's Danielle Collins. Goldfeld garnered ITA All-America honors for her efforts.
Goldfeld is set to compete in a field of 64 singles players and met the NCAA selection criteria for at-large participants, which includes a minimum of 13 singles matches completed and at least six matches played in the spring.
Capra and Harris, who met the requirement of 10 doubles matches played, including four in the spring, are slated as the fifth alternate doubles pair to enter the 32-team field. The Duke duo, which ranks 31st on the ITA doubles list, amassed a 9-3 record over the span of the season, with four victories coming against conference opponents. Capra and Harris have played primarily at the No. 2 position this season, winning all five of their matches on the second court.
The singles and doubles competition will commence Wednesday, May 20, and run through Monday, May 25. The contests will be held at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas, following the conclusion of the team championship.
