DURHAM, N.C. – Now in the heart of the 2015 outdoor season, the Duke track and field program will host the Duke Invitational April 10-11. The competition will be a six-team scored meet between Duke, North Carolina, NC State, NC Central, Clemson and Liberty.
The Blue Devils turned in a strong showing at High Point's VertKlasse Meeting last weekend, combining for 11 event victories and a number of marks that landed in Duke's top-five all-time lists.
In addition to the event wins, Duke had five athletes notch automatic qualifying performances for the ACC Outdoor Championships, bringing the total number of Blue Devil qualifications to 21. Freshman Maddy Price, debuting in the women's 400m hurdles, won the event in 1:01.08 to register the third-fastest time in school history, while multi-event athlete Teddi Maslowski earned a spot in the 200m, clocking a time of 24.14 to win the race Saturday. In the throwing events, graduate student Erica Brand finished second in the women's shot put, tossing the implement 44-10.25 (13.67m). Sophomore Kendall Gustafson became the third Duke women's javelin thrower to qualify for the ACC meet, placing third with a throw of 128-1 (39.04m). In the hammer throw, senior Stephanie Skove placed fifth with a mark of 168-5 (51.35m), the fifth-farthest throw in Duke history.
In the national landscape, Duke features seven athletes ranking in the top 50 of their respective events, including two women's pole vaulters in the top 15. Junior standout Megan Clark ranks third in NCAA Division I this season after clearing 14-5.25 (4.40m) in High Point Saturday, while freshman Madison Heath sits 15th nationally with a personal-best performance of 13-7.25 (4.15m). In the javelin events, sophomore Christine Streisel ranks 32nd with a season-best mark of 155-8 (47.44m) for the women, while redshirt junior Thomas Lang holds the 37th spot on the men's side with a throw of 217-6 (66.30m). Other throwers ranking in the top 50 are Brand in the women's discus and redshirt junior Stephen Boals in the men's shot put. Brand is 30th with a toss of 171-6 (52.27m), while Boals sits 47th with his mark of 58-6.75 (17.85m). On the track, sophomore Haley Meier is 36th nationally in the 1,500m with a time of 4:23.83.
This weekend's meet will also serve as the debut of Morris Williams Track & Field Stadium, featuring a dedication ceremony Saturday, April 11 at 10:30 a.m. Friday's portion of the meet will feature the hammer throw competitions, starting with the women at 3 p.m. The rest of the events will be held Saturday, starting with field events at noon and running events at 4 p.m. A live stream will be available here for BDN+ subscribers Saturday from 4:00-8:30 p.m.
