DURHAM, N.C. – Five Duke women's lacrosse student-athletes were named to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-South Region teams, as announced by the organization Monday, May 11.
Senior attacker Kerrin Maurer garnered all-region first team recognition while junior goalkeeper Kelsey Duryea, junior defender Claire Scarrone and senior midfielders Katie Trees and Taylor Trimble all landed on the second team.
The Blue Devils' leader in points, goals, assists and draw controls, Maurer earned first team all-region accolades for the second consecutive year and appeared on an all-region team for the third time in her career. She has notched 70 points on 41 goals and 29 assists and ranks second on the program's single season draw controls chart with 73 in 19 contests. A product of Setauket, N.Y., Maurer enters the NCAA quarterfinal round ranked 28th nationally in assists per game (1.53) and 30th in draw controls per game (3.84). Also a Tewaaraton Award nominee and a first team All-ACC pick and ACC All-Tournament team selection this spring, Maurer became Duke's all-time leader in career assists (117) in Sunday's victory over Southern California.
Duryea collected all-region honors for the second time in her career after previously being named to the second team as a rookie in 2013. The Blue Devil netminder enters the week ranked ninth in the nation in save percentage (.480) and 11th in goals against average (7.66). She is also the current conference leader in the latter category. A native of Beverly, Mass., Duryea anchors a defense that is allowing just 7.84 goals per game and has limited 15 of its 19 opponents to single-digit scoring. The unit has kept opponents off the board for 20 or more minutes six times on the season and is averaging over seven takeaways a game. Duryea joined Maurer as one of 25 Tewaaraton Award nominees and was named to the All-ACC second team.
Scarrone, who hails from Rumson, N.J., appeared on the all-region teams for the first time in her career. The junior defender ranks second on the team in ground balls (28) and has also recorded 12 caused turnovers. As a team captain, she serves as a vocal leader on a defensive unit that currently tops the ACC and comes in at 11th nationally in goals against average. Scarrone has tallied multiple caused turnovers in a game twice this season and picked up three ground balls on four occasions.
Trees has turned in a strong senior campaign after battling injuries for much of her lacrosse and soccer careers at Duke. She is second on the team in assists after notching a career-high four in Sunday's NCAA second round victory, and also ranks second on the squad in draw controls (36) and third in points (54). The midfielder from San Diego, Calif., is among the conference leaders in game-winning goals and assists and has reached career-highs in every statistical category this spring. She was selected for all-conference second team honors and was recognized on the all-region teams for the first time.
Trimble netted all-region second team accolades for the third straight year in 2015. The Rosemont, Pa., native has totaled 45 points on 35 goals and 10 assists to go along with 23 draw controls, 12 ground balls and eight caused turnovers. She was one of four Blue Devils to register a hat trick in Sunday's win over Southern California and owns six hat tricks for the year. Trimble was selected to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List and the All-ACC second team and heads into NCAA quarterfinal action ranked seventh all time at Duke in career draw controls (122) and is tied for 14th in career points (157).
Maryland led all teams in the South Region with six selections to the two teams while Duke, North Carolina Virginia all featured five selections each.
All student-athletes who have earned regional honors are eligible for selection to the IWLCA All-America teams, which will be announced May 18.
Following Sunday's 17-9 NCAA second round victory over Southern California, the third-seeded Blue Devils return to Koskinen Stadium Saturday, May 16 to host Princeton at 1 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
