BRADENTON, Fla. – Duke University women's golf standout
Leona Maguire has swept the
Division I women's golf national awards following the completion of the NCAA Championship at the Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
Maguire was named the PING WGCA Player of the Year and WGCA Freshman of the Year, which are the organization's highest player honors for 2014-15.
It marks the seventh time in Duke history a Blue Devil has been presented with the PING WGCA Player of the Year, including the second year in a row. Other Duke golfers to be named were
Celine Boutier (2013-14), Lindy Duncan (2011-12), Amanda Blumenherst (2007-08, 2006-07, 2005-06) and Liz Janangelo (2003-04).
Maguire, who hails from Cavan, Ireland, collected a school-record 70.78 stroke average, while notching eight top five and 10 top 10 placements out of 11 tournaments during her rookie campaign. The ACC Player and Rookie of the Year totaled three victories on the season at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, ACC Championship and the South Bend Regional.
It is just the second time a Duke golfer has won both the WGCA Player and Rookie of the Year honor as Blumenherst earned the awards in 2005-06. Maguire is the fourth Blue Devil to be selected WGCA National Rookie of the Year joining Beth Bauer (1998-99), Brittany Lang (2003-04) and Blumenherst (2005-06).
Her stroke average of 70.78 bested Blumenherst's mark of 71.00 from the 2006-07 and 2007-08 campaigns. Maguire equaled Blumenherst's Blue Devil record of 24 rounds of even or under par as well from the 2005-06 season, while her nine top five finishes this season ranked tied third.
Maguire netted a team-best 10 rounds in the 60s and counted all 32 rounds during the 2014-15 campaign. She registered a head-to-head mark of 894-54-13 on the year. Maguire currently ranks No. 1 nationally in both the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings and the Golfstat Cup.
In the Duke freshman record books, Maguire closed the season ranking tied second in top five finishes (9), tied second in top 10 finishes (10), tied third in top 20 finishes (10), tied first in victories (3), first in stroke average (70.68) and tied first in even or under par rounds (24).
Recognized annually as the top honor in women's collegiate golf, the PING WGCA Player of the Year Award is awarded to the best player in Division I women's golf. The award was first given in 1987 are selected by a prestigious collection of women's collegiate golf coaches who follow criteria that has been established to identify the finest player for the past year. This criteria include -- Head to head competition, comparison with common opponents, scoring average, place finishes in regular season events and tournament wins and strength of schedule.
She helped lead Duke to three team titles, including the NCAA South Bend Regional along with a second place finish in stroke play competition at the NCAA Championship. The Blue Devils went on to advance to the match play semifinals before falling to Baylor, 3-2.
