EUGENE, Ore. – The second day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships saw the duo of junior Megan Clark and freshman Madison Heath compete in the women's pole vault event, but both vaulters were unable to pass opening height.
The vaulting pair saw their seasons come to an end sooner than anyone would have predicted, with the difference between being eliminated and advancing coming down to inches on each of their attempts. Most notably on Clark's first vault, the junior out of Fort Benning, Ga., seemed to have the height to clear by a full foot but clipped the bar on the way up.
Both Clark and Heath produced tremendous seasons to earn the trip to Eugene. After placing second at the NCAA Indoor Championships by tying the ACC record with a clearance of 14-9.00 (4.50m), winning gold at the ACC Indoor Championships and ultimately being named the ACC Indoor Women's Field Performer of the Year, Clark carried that momentum to the outdoor season where she set the school and Duke facility record with a height of 14-9.00 (4.50m) at the Duke Invitational before winning the conference crown at the ACC Outdoor Championships.
Heath, who was named Duke's Outdoor Freshman of the Year earlier this spring for the women's team, steadily improved throughout her rookie campaign in Durham, highlighted by clearing 13-9.25 (4.20m) at the Mt. Sac Relays. At the NCAA East Preliminary Round meet, Heath cleared all three heights on her first attempt to secure her spot in Eugene.
Rounding out Duke's time in Eugene, graduate student Erica Brand will compete in the women's discus Saturday at 4:45 p.m. (ET).
