EUGENE, Ore. – Competing on the final day of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., graduate student Erica Brand placed 21st in the women's discus Saturday.
Brand wrapped up her final season in Durham on the sport's biggest stage, her first trip to Eugene since making it as a sophomore in 2012. After fouling her first attempt, the Shawnee, Kan., product tossed the implement 165-11 (50.57m) on her second throw. Needing to move into the top nine to earn a spot in finals and three more attempts, Brand was unable to improve her mark, throwing a nearly identical 165-10 (50.54m) on her third and final try.
Brand put together a great season in her final spring wearing a Duke uniform, highlighted by setting the school record in the discus with a 180-3 (54.94m) performance at the NCAA East Preliminary Round to earn her spot at the national meet. The discus specialist also took silver in the event at the ACC Outdoor Championships to earn first team All-ACC honors and finished first in the discus four times during the outdoor campaign.
With the 2015 collegiate season concluded, qualifying athletes will return to Hayward Field for the USA Track & Field Championships June 25-28.
