DURHAM, N.C. – After the ink dried on all the National Letters of Intent for men's tennis programs around the country, Duke finished with the No. 2 incoming freshman class in the nation, according to a release by TennisRecruiting.net.
Adrian Chamdani, Catalin Mateas, Vincent Lin and Ryan Dickerson will enroll at Duke in August and join the Blue Devils for the 2015-16 season. The four comprise the No. 2 group on TennisRecruiting.net's latest list of the top 25 incoming classes in the country, totaling 592 points out of a possible 625. The Blue Devils totaled the second most first-place votes with seven. Duke, Notre Dame (No. 9) and North Carolina (No. 11) are the ACC's three representatives among the top 12.
To compile the rankings, TennisRecruiting.net and Solfire asked 25 panelists to vote on the rankings. Each of the panelists submitted his/her take on the recruiting classes. Schools received 25 points for each first-place vote, 24 points for each second-place vote, on down to 1 point for each 25th-place vote. Georgia finished first with 606 points.
Chamdani, of the Tompkins Tennis Academy and Bellarmine College Prep, is a Santa Clara, Calif., product. He has risen to as high as No. 12 in the TennisRecruiting.net national rankings. In December, Chamdani took part in the USTA National Winter Championships and won two matches in the main draw. A month earlier, he claimed the Norcal Boys' 18 Jr. Excellence event in November with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the championship match and advanced to the semifinals of the USTA National Selection Tournament. During the spring of 2014 he was one of 41 boys from across the country to be named a 2014 All-American by the National High School Tennis All-American Foundation.
Mateas, from Braintree, Mass., attended the US Tennis Association Training Center in Boca Raton, Fla., and was born in Romania. He is a blue chip recruit and at one point was ranked as high as the No. 3 prospect in the United States the by TennisRecruiting.net. Earlier this spring, Mateas advanced to the quarterfinals of the Easter Bowl IFT Tennis Championships in Rancho Mirage, Calif. He has also taken part in events in Slovakia, Romania and Italy since late April. In January, Mateas advanced to the quarterfinals in doubles at the 51st Coffee Bowl in Costa Rica. During November, he took part in the Patuju Junior Open in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, and advanced to the quarterfinals with a pair of straight set victories. In October, he played in the Round of 16 at the Pan American ITF in Tulsa, Okla. He also advanced to the Round of 16 at the Canadian Open Jr. Championships in late August. In the 16 division, Mateas won a doubles gold ball at the Easter Bowl, the Super Bowl of junior tennis.
Lin is the third blue chip prospect in the class and has been ranked as the No. 9 prospect in the nation by TennisRecruiting.net. The Schaumburg, Ill., product played high school tennis for Schaumburg and on the junior circuit reached the round of 16 at the Plantation ITF in the middle of May. In the summer of 2014, Lin took part in the USTA National Championship and was a quarterfinalist in the consolation bracket. He also played in the consolation bracket championship of the USTA's National Clay Court Championship in July. Last winter, he won the USTA Regional Tournament in Dayton, Ohio. He was previously ranked No. 1 in the 14, 16 and 18 divisions of the USTA/Midwest Section.
Dickerson, a five-star recruit from Marlton, N.J., has risen as high the No. 49 recruit in the country by TennisRecruiting.net. Dickerson also took part in the Easter Bowl ITF Tennis Championships in April and participated in the USTA National Selection Tournament in February. In late November, he won the USTA Open Regional Tournament, only dropping one set in four matches. Dickerson won the L4 sectional tournament in August of 2014 and advanced to the consolation semifinals of the USTA National Selection Tournament in May of 2014. During his junior career, Dickerson has collected five USTA silver balls at national events. As a freshman at Mooretown High School, Dickerson led the team to a 33-4 record while playing No. 1 singles. The following year, he helped the program to the state championship before being home schooled to increase his ability to play on the ITF circuit.
