DURHAM, N.C. – The Blue Devils will celebrate 20 years of women's lacrosse at Duke University in 2015-16, highlighted by an Oct. 17 gala and alumni weekend on campus.
The Duke women's lacrosse program was established in 1996 and has risen to one of the nation's elite under the direction of head coach Kerstin Kimel. The Blue Devils made their seventh trip to the national semifinals this past spring, and have been selected to 18 consecutive NCAA Tournament fields – the third longest current streak in the country.
In addition to capturing four ACC regular season titles and one ACC Tournament championship, Duke has boasted 56 All-America selections, 74 all-region honorees, 64 All-ACC picks and 19 Academic All-America accolades over the 20 seasons. Graduates of the program have gone on to successful ventures in a wide array of professional fields spanning the globe.
“As we embark on our 20th year of women's lacrosse we are excited to launch what will be a year of celebration to honor our past players and commemorate our past seasons,” Kimel said. “We are looking forward to what will undoubtedly be a fantastic weekend in October where we will gather our current generation of players with those who helped establish Duke women's lacrosse and build it into the successful and thriving program it is today.”
The fall celebration weekend will begin the evening of Friday, Oct. 16 with a meet and greet hosted by the Duke coaches and the Varsity Club staff at the Washington Duke Inn's Bull Durham Lounge. Saturday's activities kick off with an alumni game at 11 a.m. on the Blue Devils' practice field, followed by a tailgate, fun and games for children and campus tours. The evening will feature the 20th Season Gala at the Washington Duke Inn, with a cocktail reception and silent auction taking place beforehand.
The fall events will provide an opportunity for former and current student-athletes to remember their times with the Duke program and build toward its future.
The program will also host a recognition weekend in the spring for former players, current and former parents and fans to celebrate 20 years of Duke women's lacrosse. The event, which will be announced at a later date, will be held in conjunction with one of the Blue Devils' home games at Koskinen Stadium.
