DURHAM, N.C. – Duke redshirt senior punter Will Monday was named to the preseason watch list for the Ray Guy Award, presented by the Augusta Sports Council, for the third straight campaign. The award honors the nation's top collegiate punter.
Monday, a 6-4, 210-pound native of Flowery Branch, Ga., was a 2014 Sports Illustrated honorable mention All-America team. He was also placed on the 2015 Lindy's Sports Preseason All-ACC second team and earned a spot on the Athlon Sports second team this summer. Monday, who has earned All-ACC honors all three years of his career (1st team in 2012; 2nd team in 2013; 3rd team in 2014), has played in 40 career games, punting 195 times for 8,473 yards (43.45 ypp). Of his 195 punts, 41 have resulted in fair catches, 20 in touchbacks and 57 downed inside the 20-yard line.
Last fall, Monday helped Duke allow just 33 punt return yards, or 2.54 yards a game, in 2014. The Blue Devils' average of 2.06 yards allowed a return was the nation's third best. Monday has ranked among the ACC's top four in punting in each of the past three seasons (1st in 2012; 4th in 2013; 3rd in 2014) and enters 2015 ranked 10th on the ACC's all-time punting average chart. He is the league's active leader in career punting average.
The Augusta Sports Council created the Ray Guy Award in 2000 to honor Thomson, Ga., native and College and Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, Ray Guy. The Ray Guy Award winner is determined by a national voting body of sports writers, college coaches, sports information directors and past Ray Guy Award winners.
In early November, the Ray Guy Award committee will meet to select 10 semifinalists, who will be announced on November 13. A national body of Football Bowl Subdivision sports information directors, coaches, media representatives, and previous Ray Guy Award winners will then vote for the top three finalists, to be announced on November 23. After the finalists are named, the voting body will cast ballots again to select the nation's top punter. The winner will be announced live during The Home Depot College Football Awards airing on ESPN on Thursday, December 10.
The Blue Devils bring back six returning starters on offense and six on defense from last season's squad, which qualified for a bowl for the third straight season. Duke opens the 2015 campaign at Tulane on Thursday, September 3. To order Duke season tickets, call (919) 681-BLUE or visit www.GoDuke.com/footballtix.
