DURHAM, N.C. – Duke senior kicker Ross Martin was named to the preseason watch list for the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, as announced by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission, for the third straight year. Martin finished as a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award in 2012 and 2014.
Martin, a 5-10, 185-pound product of Solon, Ohio, was a Sports Illustrated honorable mention All-America selection in 2012 and 2014. He is a 2015 Lindy's Sports Preseason All-ACC second team selection and was placed on the Phil Steele Magazine preseason third team. In addition, Lindy's named him the eighth best kicker in the nation entering the 2015 season.
Martin enters his final campaign as the Blue Devils' career points leader with 310, the fifth most among active FBS kickers, and having converted a school record 110 consecutive PATs. He has played in 40 career games and made 52-of-63 field goals and 154-of-155 PATs. He has scored at least one point in all 40 games and owns 10 contests with 10 or more points. Martin will begin the year as the program record holder in points per game (7.75), PATs made, PATs attempted and field goal percentage (.825) and stands second in field goals, field goal attempts and field goals of 50 or more yards (four) and third in PAT percentage (.994).
Semifinalists for the Lou Groza Award will be announced November 5, while the three finalists will be unveiled November 23. The winner of the 2015 Lou Groza Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on December 10.
The award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou “The Toe” Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
The Blue Devils bring back six returning starters on offense and six on defense from last season's squad, which qualified for a bowl for the third straight season. Duke opens the 2015 campaign at Tulane on Thursday, September 3. To order Duke season tickets, call (919) 681-BLUE or visit www.GoDuke.com/footballtix.
