OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Duke redshirt senior safety Jeremy Cash was one of 30 NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision student-athletes selected as a candidate for the 2015 Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I FBS senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Cash, a 6-2, 210-pound product of Miami, Fla., has already graduated from Duke with a bachelor's in psychology and is currently pursuing a master's in liberal studies.
On the field, he is a returning All-ACC and All-America selection at safety. He is a preseason All-America pick by Athlon Sports (2nd team), CBS Sports (2nd team), ESPN (1st team), Lindy's Sports (2nd team), Phil Steele (1st team), Sports Illustrated (1st team), Sporting News (2nd team) and USA Today (1st team). Cash is charted as the No. 2 safety in the nation by Lindy's Sports, the NFLDraftScout.com No. 1 draft-eligible strong safety and the No. 10 overall draft-eligible prospect in the ACC by Lindy's Sports.
In 27 career games (27 starts) at Duke, Cash has 232 tackles, 20.0 tackles for loss, 5.5 quarterback sacks, six INTs, 11 PBUs, six caused fumbles, three fumble recoveries and seven QB pressures. He was the only defensive back in the country to have tallied 100+ tackles, 10.0+ TFL & 5.0+ sacks in 2014.
Of the 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award, 14 have grade-point averages of 3.0 or higher with five of those holding above a 3.5. Three are returning All-Americans, and 18 were all-conference selections in 2014.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the football bowl season in early January.
