DURHAM, N.C. – Coming off of a trip to the NCAA semifinals and a 16-5 finish last spring, head coach Kerstin Kimel and the Duke women's lacrosse team welcome 12 freshmen to the program ahead of the 2016 campaign.
The class of 2019 features student-athletes from five states as well as the United Kingdom and includes Margot Calmar, Sarah Frauen and Elizabeth Fucigna of Connecticut, Olivia Jenner of Maryland, Ella Bonafede and Charlotte Tucci of New York, Chloë Lewis of North Carolina, Jamie Lockwood, Ellie Majure, Morgan Rodgers and Michelle Staggers of Virginia and Phoebe O'Hara of Gloucestershire, England.
“We are very proud to welcome this rather large and exceptional group of freshmen to our Duke lacrosse family,” Kimel said. “They are great blend of exceptional students, athletes and personalities from all over the U.S. and abroad. We fully expect that a handful of these freshmen will be poised to contribute on the field immediately and our staff is very excited to work with and develop them to their full potential. Most importantly, I am confident that each member of this class will contribute to the unique fabric of the Duke community and go on to represent and serve the university and our athletic program with tremendous pride, spirit and class.”
Ella Bonafede – Midfield – Bay Shore, N.Y. – St. Anthony's
Bonafede, who hails from the same high school as Duke All-American Kerrin Maurer ('15), guided St. Anthony's to four straight CHSAA league titles. She was tabbed the CHSAA Championship MVP twice and garnered all-league honors her sophomore and senior seasons. Also an Under Armour All-American as an underclassman, Bonafede totaled 24 goals, 20 assists and 25 ground balls during her senior campaign.
Margot Calmar – Midfield – Stonington, Conn. – Stonington
A defensive midfielder at Stonington High School, Calmar helped guide her team to a state championship her junior year. She was recognized on the all-state first team as a senior after garnering all-state second team honors the year before. Calmar wrapped up her four seasons with 35 goals, 18 assists, 320 ground balls, 78 interceptions and 252 take aways in addition to receiving all-area recognition on three occasions.
Sarah Frauen – Defense – Greenwich, Conn. – Greenwich Academy
Frauen was an honorable mention All-America selection as a junior at Greenwich Academy. The defender recorded 13 goals, 12 draw controls and 19 caused turnovers as a senior to earn all-league honors. She rounded out her prep career with 31 goals, 61 draw controls and 44 caused turnovers and was also named to the US Lacrosse All-Academic list twice.
Elizabeth Fucigna – Midfield/Defense – Darien, Conn. – Darien
Fucigna completed her prep career at Darien High School in Connecticut, where she was a first team all-state and all-conference pick as a senior. She helped the team capture the state and conference championships her final season, earning team MVP recognition. Also a standout on the soccer field and the track, Fucigna was a US Lacrosse Academic All-American as well.
Olivia Jenner – Midfield – Annapolis, Md. – McDonogh
A US Lacrosse and Under Armour All-American, Jenner comes to Durham from McDonogh, the top-ranked high school program in the country. She served as the team captain there, leading the squad in draw controls (98) and goals (54) as a senior. Jenner garnered all-metro and all-conference recognition as both a junior and senior, and concluded her prep career by being selected to the North vs. South All-Star Game as one of the top 44 players in the country.
Chloë Lewis – Midfield – Chapel Hill, N.C. – Durham Academy
Lewis joins the Duke program from nearby Durham Academy, where she was a member of the state runner-up team as a sophomore. She earned all-state and all-conference accolades each of her four years and was named her conference's player of the year as a senior in addition to netting All-America honors from US Lacrosse. A native of Chapel Hill, Lewis also excelled in field hockey and swimming at Durham Academy.
Jamie Lockwood – Goalkeeper – Richmond, Va. – Douglas Southall Freeman
Lockwood anchored Douglas Southall Freeman to a district title her junior year en route to being named the regional and district player of the year. The goalkeeper went on to earn second team all-state honors as a senior, and was a two-time first team all-region and all-district selection during her prep career.
Ellie Majure – Attack – Falls Church, Va. – St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School
A product of Falls Church, Va., Majure totaled 268 goals, 160 draw controls and 92 ground balls during her time at St. Stephen's and St. Agnes. She joined Jenner on the Under Armour All-America Senior Team this past spring and received All-America distinction from US Lacrosse as a junior and senior. Majure was also a two-time Under Armour Underclass All-American and was tabbed the All-Metro player of the year her final season.
Phoebe O'Hara – Midfield/Attack – Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, UK – Cheltenham Ladies College
O'Hara joins the Blue Devils from across the pond, where she led her varsity team in scoring and assists as a senior. She also captained her squad to the quarterfinals of the national schools for the first time in program history. A native of Cheltenham in Gloucestershire, O'Hara was a captain on England's U19 team that won the Oxton Tournament in 2014, and also helped the U19s claim the Team Home Internationals Championship three times.
Morgan Rodgers – Midfield – Warrenton, Va. – Kettle Run
Rodgers was a three-time conference player of the year at Kettle Run and received recognition on the national level as a member of the 2013 and 2014 Under Armour All-America underclass teams. Also a two-time Brine High School All-American for the Washington, D.C., region, she finished her prep career with 303 goals, 63 assists, 228 ground balls, 460 draw controls and 115 caused turnovers. Rodgers led Kettle Run to a district title her senior year and earned first team all-state honors.
Michelle Staggers – Midfield/Defense – Stafford, Va. – Virginia Episcopal School
As a three-time captain at Virginia Episcopal, Staggers helped guide her squad to the state quarterfinals her senior year. The Stafford, Va., native was a two-time first team all-state honoree and received first team All-Valley recognition as a junior. Staggers recorded 28 goals, 19 ground balls and a school-record 109 draw controls her final season.
Charlotte Tucci – Midfield/Defense – Rye, N.Y. – Rye
Tucci comes to Durham from Rye High School in New York, where she was a three-time all-section and all-league pick. The younger sister of former Blue Devil captain Emma Tucci ('14), she was named to the New Jersey Under Armour All-America team in 2013 and the New England Under Armour All-America squad in 2014. Tucci totaled 202 goals, 68 assists, 117 draw controls and 99 ground balls over her four seasons and as a senior was tabbed her high school's female athlete of the year.
