DAVIDSON, N.C.—The Duke men's soccer team got goals from Brody Huitema and Macario Hing-Glover in a hard-fought 2-2 draw at Davidson to close out a three-game road swing. The Blue Devils outshot the Wildcats 19-12 for the game.
Duke moves to 4-3-2 overall, while Davidson stands at 3-3-3 on the year. The Blue Devils rallied to take the lead from a goal down before Davidson used a late second-half score to tie the game en route to the 2-2 tie.
Despite the Blue Devils controlling the majority of possession, Davidson was the first to get on the board in the 11th minute on a strike from Maxi Pragnell. Matthew Gandier touched the ball to Pragnell who took a chance from 20 yards and found the lower left corner for the 1-0 lead. The goal was just the third first-half goal Duke had allowed this season.
Duke continued to dominate the run of play and started to generate dangerous scoring chances. One of the best chances of the night for the Blue Devils came from a great give-and-go between Brian White and Zach Mathers as Mathers' slight touch was tapped wide by Davidson goalkeeper Matt Pacifici.
The Blue Devils finally broke through in the 39th minute off a highlight-reel goal from Brody Huitema. Carter Manley fed Bryson Asher deep on the right flank. The sophomore midfielder sent a cross into the box where Huitema scissor-kicked it past Pacifici. The goal was his first of the season and tied the game up with six minutes left in the half.
The Blue Devils returned the favor to Davidson with a goal in the early minutes of the second half to grab their first lead of the night. A bad giveaway from a Wildcat defender in his defensive third resulted sophomore Macario Hing-Glover stepping in and taking a few touches to beat Pacifici one-on-one for the 2-1 advantage.
The Wildcats started to take control of the game, putting the Blue Devils on their heels. Davidson, holding all of the momentum, got the equalizer in the 74th minute on an Alex Rotunda strike from the top of the box.
Momentum switched in Duke's favor after the tying goal as the Blue Devils pressed forward for the go-ahead. Mathers had a great look from 12 yards that sailed over the bar and Hing-Glover regularly gave the left back from Davidson fits on the right wing, but Duke couldn't find the back of the net.
In overtime, neither team was able to generate much offense. The best opportunity came off the foot of Davidson's Pragnell, but Wilson Fisher knocked it over the bar to keep the game tied.
Fisher finished with four saves. Duke had 12 corner kicks to Davidson's three. Pacifici had seven saves in the game for the Wildcats.
Duke is back in action in just three days when it hosts ACC foe Syracuse Friday. Kickoff against the Orange is set for 7 p.m.
