DURHAM, N.C.—Five different Blue Devils scored a goal and seven players registered at least one point as the Duke men's soccer team bested Loyola 5-1 to remain perfect on the year. Jeremy Ebobisse led all scorers with a goal and two assists.
Duke improves to 4-0 overall heading into ACC play Friday night against fifth-ranked Virginia. Four of the Blue Devils five scorers registered their first tallies of the year, while rookie Ciaran McKenna notched the first of his collegiate career. Eleven of Duke's 18 points in the game came from the sophomore class.
The Blue Devils jumped all over the Greyhounds from the opening whistle. Ebobisse started the first-half scoring flurry of three goals in the 20th minute, tapping in Ryan Thompson's cross to the back post. The tally was his team-best fourth of the year and second in as many games.
“I thought we did a great job starting the game and getting on top and passing the ball and creating a lot of havoc in their final third,” said head coach John Kerr. “I'm very pleased with a 3-0 lead early in the game. It took a little pressure off of us and allowed us to really get confident. We've made these kinds of games difficult in the past so it was nice to be on top from the beginning.”
Nearly 15 minutes later, with Duke dominating the action in the attacking third, McKenna collected a loose ball from 30 yards and struck a perfect low shot just inside the right post past Loyola goalie Matt Sanchez.
Sophomore Cameron Moseley got into the mix two minutes later with a one-time finish off a Jared Rist cross from the left side. The goal was Moseley's first of the year and put the Blue Devils up 3-0 at the half.
“It's great to have guys come on the field and get their first goals,” Kerr said. “It's nice when you have the depth like we do. It's a positive reaction to what we're doing in training and also it gives us options up front.”
Duke didn't miss a beat in the second half, scoring three minutes in off of superb combination play from the midfield. Brian White fed Ebobisse who laid if off for sophomore Macario Hing-Glover who knocked it in from 12 yards for his first score of the year.
The Greyhounds got one back in the 62nd minute to run Duke's shutout, but the Blue Devils responded two minutes later with a tally from White. Thompson and Ebobisse provided the assists on the final score of the night.
All three of Duke's goalkeepers saw action, but did not have to make a save. Sanchez finished with five saves as the Blue Devils outshot the Greyhounds 22-7.
Duke opens ACC play Friday night with reigning NCAA Champion and No. 5 Virginia at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast by ESPN3.
