Dave Sime, the 1956 ACC Athlete of the Year, Olympic silver medalist and member of the Duke Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 1976, passed away on Tuesday, January 12 in Miami Beach, Fla. He was 79.
A native of Fairlawn, N.J., Sime was a member of three varsity programs at Duke – baseball, football and track and field – before graduating in 1958 with a degree in psychology. He graduated from Duke Medical School in 1962 and went on to practice ophthalmology in Miami.
On the diamond, Sime led Duke to the ACC Championship in 1957 by batting a team-high .376 while earning first team all-conference and second team All-America honors. On the gridiron, he played one season for the Blue Devils and was selected in the 29th round of the 1959 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions.
On the track, Sime captured 12 total ACC championships (4 indoor & 8 outdoor), twice earned MVP honors at the ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships (1956 & 1958), garnered All-America accolades in 1956, set seven world records (1 indoor & 6 outdoor) and was named to the ACC 50th Anniversary teams for both indoor and outdoor track and field. In addition, he won the silver medal in the 100-meter competition at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, Italy.
In addition to enshrinement in the Duke Athletics Hall of Fame, Sime is a member of the Drake Relays (1959), USA Track & Field (1981), New Jersey Sports (2004) and North Carolina Sports (1967) Halls of Fame.
Sime's son, Scott, lettered four seasons (1981-82-83-84) as a fullback at Duke before graduating in 1986. Sime's grandson,
Max McCaffrey, lettered four seasons (2012-13-14-15) as a wide receiver at Duke and finished his 53-game playing career with 117 receptions for 1,341 yards and 12 touchdowns.
