DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University senior
Kara Wilson was selected Friday by the Washington Spirit as the No. 37 overall pick in the fourth round of the 2016 National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) Draft, which took place at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, Md.
Wilson, who competed in 68 career matches for the Blue Devils over the last four years, became the fourth Blue Devil drafted over the last three years in the NWSL – Natasha Anasi (No. 13 by Boston Breakers in 2014), Mollie Pathman (No. 23 by Boston Breakers in 2014) and Kim DeCesare (No. 34 by Boston Breakers in 2014).
A native of Potomac, Md., Wilson played on both the defensive and midfield slots during her tenure and totaled one goal, three assists and five points. As a senior, Wilson played mostly holding midfield and dropped back onto the defensive side at times as well. She helped lead Duke to 14 shutouts, which ranked as the second-most in school history. The Blue Devils went on to advance to the NCAA Championship match before falling, 1-0, to Penn State in the finals.
Wilson is very familiar with the Washington Spirit as the 5-10 standout played during the summer with the Spirit Reserve team over the last number of off seasons.
“I am definitely excited about getting drafted in the NWSL and the Washington Spirit,” said Wilson. “It is especially exciting since I know the organization and the coaches. I have been playing with the Spirit Reserves for several years and I have an understanding of what the organization is like. I couldn't be more excited about joining the Spirit.”
