CLEMSON, S.C. – Sophomore Azurá Stevens turned in a career-high 33 points to guide the Blue Devils to a 72-43 victory over Clemson Thursday evening at Jervey Gymnasium. Duke outscored the Tigers by 18 in the second half to collect its first road win since defeating Penn by a 57-50 margin November 13.
Stevens topped the 20-point mark for the eighth time on the season and added a team-high seven rebounds, and redshirt sophomore Rebecca Greenwell (12) and junior Oderah Chidom (11) also chipped in double-figure scoring. The Blue Devils improved to 14-6 overall and evened their ACC ledger at 3-3 while Clemson dropped to 4-14 (0-5 ACC).
Duke displayed solid perimeter shooting in the opening minutes for an early scoring burst. Stevens had eight of the squad's first 12 points and freshmen Kyra Lambert and Faith Suggs both added treys to pace the Blue Devils to a double-digit lead by the end of the first period.
Stevens pushed it to 26-12 a few minutes into the second quarter and Duke's defense continued to hold the Tigers below 40 percent shooting from the field. Clemson managed to trim the deficit to 10 several times but the Blue Devils responded to each mini-run to remain in front , 35-24 at the intermission.
Duke also controlled the glass in the opening half with a 20-11 advantage on the boards. Stevens' 18 first-half points led all players while Greenwell had seven.
The Blue Devils shot over 50 percent into the third frame, stretching their lead to 17 at the 5:36 mark. The squad also rounded out the period with 15 assists, led by four from Lambert.
Chidom registered nine of her 11 points in the second half to join Stevens and Greenwell in double figures. Defensively, Duke limited the Tigers to just eight points in the final quarter to seal the 29-point victory.
Three different Clemson players – Nelly Perry, Aliyah Collier and McKayla Johnson – totaled eight points each in the loss.
Duke returns home to Cameron Indoor Stadium Sunday for a 3 p.m. matchup against Tobacco Road rival North Carolina on RSN.
