DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke men's tennis program signed two of the nation's best recruits to National Letters of Intent in November and the pair has the Blue Devils with the No. 3 incoming group in the nation, according to rankings released by TennisRecruiting.net Monday.
Robert Levine and Nick Stachowiak will enroll at Duke in August of 2016 and join the Blue Devils for the 2016-17 season. The two comprise what is currently the No. 3 recruiting group on TennisRecruiting.net's list of the top 25 incoming classes in the country, garnering 558 points out of a possible 625. Duke, Notre Dame (No. 5) and North Carolina (No. 15) are the ACC's three representatives among the top 15.
To compile the rankings, TennisRecruiting.net asked junior tennis experts from around the country to vote for the top classes. Each of the panelists submitted his/her take. Schools received 25 points for each first-place vote, 24 points for each second-place vote, on down to one point for each 25th-place vote. The panelists did not consider incoming transfer students in their voting - and they also did not consider players who started college earlier this month.
Levine, out of Bedford, N.Y., is a blue chip prospect from Laurel Springs School. He has been as high as No. 3 in the TennisRecruiting.net national rankings and currently stands No. 5.
Levine has achieved a top-100 ITF ranking, aided by 60 points from the March of 2015 International Spring Championships. He reached the singles quarterfinals with a 3-1 record and paired with current Blue Devil Catalin Mateas in doubles as the two advanced to the semifinals.
In August of 2015, Levine played in the Winnipeg National Bank Futures presented by Manshield Construction qualifying draw and defeated Connor Davies of Canada to advance to the main draw. Once in the main draw, Levine downed Edward Bourchier of Australia 6-2, 6-1 to move to the second round. As a result, Levine picked up one ATP point and earned his first ATP ranking.
Most recently, Levine played in two Dominican Republic Futures events in December of 2015. He won two qualifying draw matches in each tournament to move to the main draw. In the F2 main draw, he captured two more matches to move to the round of 16, where he fell to Argentina's Juan Ignacio Galarza, 6-1, 6-3. The pair of wins gave Levine three more ATP points and his highest ever ATP ranking.
Stachowiak, a local product from Cary, N.C., has attended North Hills Tennis Academy during his senior year. The blue chip recruit has risen to as high as the No. 6 prospect in the United States by TennisRecruiting.net. He owns the No. 1 spot in the IMG TennisRPI and topped out at No. 7 in the USTA standings.
Last weekend at the Southern Winter L1 Championships in Hilton Head, S.C., Stachowiak advanced to the main draw round of 32 and consolation quarterfinals. He also captured the doubles championship with Sean Sculley via an 8-6 victory against Bennett Crane and Sami Soufi in the title match. At the South Carolina ITF in November of 2014, Stachowiak advanced to the doubles quarterfinals and round of 32 in the singles main draw.
While attending Middle Creek High School his first three years, Stachowiak won two North Carolina High School Athletic Association 4A state championships and earned All-America honors. He took the Greensboro March Madness Junior Championship and 2014 USTA National Selection Tournament title while finishing second at the USTA National Selection Tournament in early 2015. Stachowiak also won the Southern Closed Championship and the 2015 USTA National Selection Tournament, in singles and doubles.
