DURHAM, N.C. – The men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrap up the regular season slate Saturday, hosting North Carolina in Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion. GoDuke.com recently caught up with Chelsea Ye, one of the 11 Blue Devil seniors who will be honored prior to the 11 a.m. meet.
GoDuke.com: What are you looking forward to about Senior Day Saturday?
Chelsea Ye: Senior Day is going to be very surreal for our class because we have all talked about it. I don't know if we are quite ready to be done, but at the same time it's been such an amazing journey with the Duke program, and to see us progress to where we are now. The coaching staff has put in a lot of effort to really bring in some of the top recruits, and it's been a lot of fun leading all of these extremely talented, extremely fast individuals to where we are now as a team.
GoDuke.com: Looking back to the Nike Cup Invitational in the fall, can you talk about the teams' performances with the men winning and the women taking second?
CY: It really showed what we are capable of, and it just excites everyone to know that we have already come so far early in the season. ACCs are going to be a blast.
GoDuke.com: Both squads also got out to some of the best starts in program history in dual meet action. What has that meant to you guys?
CY: It signifies all of the hard work and hours we have put into the sport. It's a lot of hours, a lot of grinding. This season in particular it has finally paid off in our dual meet record. It's very nice to know that everything we have put into the sport has shown up in return.
GoDuke.com: Can you touch on the importance of relays as you get prepared to head into the postseason?
CY: During the Nike Cup we had three or four relays that were one or two tenths off of the NCAA A cuts, which is obviously what we are going after at ACCs. It is going to come down to a lot of rest and a lot of precision for the relays. I think that we are going to do great at ACCs.
GoDuke.com: What is the team's level of excitement on finishing up the dual season against North Carolina?
CY: It's been a lot of fun racing against Carolina because they have always been an extremely strong program. We haven't had that big of a chance to make it close in the past, but clearly from the Nike Cup and how we have been swimming this year, it's going to be a great meet.
GoDuke.com: What are some of the team goals heading into the postseason?
CY: One of our biggest team goals we had at the beginning of the season was having a team presence at NCAAs. I believe at ACCs we are just going to try to get as many people qualified as possible. At NCAAs, I think it is just really for the freshmen and the sophomores to experience it, and for the juniors and senior to really hone in and go there and do what we are supposed to do and race.
GoDuke.com: For you, what has it meant to serve as one of the team's leaders this season?
CY: This team has essentially become my family. I really have loved being a part of this team and doing everything we have done this year, especially with our progression in breaking into the top 25 rankings. I think, just reflecting back, swimming for Duke has taught me so much about others, but I have learned a lot about myself which has been a really amazing experience that will help me further on in life.
