SYRACUSE, N.Y. – In a meeting of top-four ACC squads, fourth-ranked Syracuse used a high-scoring first half to hand No. 2 Duke a 5-1 loss Friday at the Orange's J.S. Coyne Stadium.
Syracuse tallied all five scores on penalty corner opportunities while the Blue Devils (10-2, 3-1 ACC) notched a lone corner goal late in the contest.
"Syracuse executed well on their corners," said head coach Pam Bustin. "They got the momentum and we were caught unraveling for a little bit. We got it back and honestly we played very well at the end of the first half and during the second half. It's frustrating. We just got caught on the run defensively. We have to get back to our basics, the fundamentals of our team defense below the 50."
Roos Weers put Syracuse in front in the ninth minute, scoring on the Orange's second penalty corner of the contest. Weers would find the back of the cage again on another corner opportunity 10 minutes later before Emma Lamison followed with a third corner goal.
Duke struggled to gain possession, and Syracuse took advantage of another corner play to make it a 4-0 contest in the 27th minute.
The Blue Devils drew their first corner opportunity with time expiring in the half, but saw the ensuing shot go wide of the cage. The Orange would round out the period with 11 shots and eight corners while Duke logged just two shots in the first 35 minutes.
In the second half, the Blue Devils shored up their defense around the circle and a diving save by redshirt freshman goalkeeper Sammi Steele kept Syracuse off the board on a corner attempt. Buoyed by the defensive effort, Duke pushed forward in search of an opportunity to break through with a score.
The Blue Devil response came in the 64th minute when graduate student forward Aisling Naughton sent a rebound shot into the back of the cage on a corner play. However, the Orange countered just over two minutes later and limited Duke's touches the rest of the way for the 5-1 victory.
The five goals marked the most allowed by the Blue Devils this season.
Duke's second-half effort narrowed the final shot margin to 14-10. Corners remained in Syracuse's favor as well at 10-6. Junior back Alyssa Chillano led all Duke players with three shots on goal for the contest.
Bustin's squad will look to rebound Sunday at No. 12 Princeton. The 1 p.m. contest will be broadcast on the Ivy League Digital Network.
