DURHAM, N.C. – Six members of the Duke field hockey program were selected for All-South Region honors, as announced Tuesday by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA).
Junior back Alyssa Chillano, senior forward Heather Morris, graduate student forward Aisling Naughton, freshman midfielder Margaux Paolino and redshirt freshman goalkeeper Sammi Steele earned spots on the first team while junior forward Ashley Kristen received second team honors.
The Blue Devils' six selections across the two teams matched North Carolina for the most in the South Region. Under the guidance of head coach Pam Bustin and her staff, Duke has boasted five or more all-region selections in five of the last six seasons.
A second team All-South Region pick a year ago, Chillano garnered first team recognition after leading the Blue Devils in points (32) and goals (13) and ranking among the ACC leaders in both categories. She remained an integral part of Duke's back line this fall while also figuring largely into the squad's offensive penalty corners. The Phoenixville, Pa., native notched three multiple-goal games and was a first team All-ACC selection.
Morris garnered all-region laurels for the second-straight year while earning a spot on the first team for the first time. The veteran forward notched 25 points on 11 goals and three assists and turned in three multiple-goal games, including a four-goal performance against James Madison Sept. 11. Morris also received a nod on the All-ACC first team this season and recently represented Duke in the 2016 Victory Sports Tours/NFHCA Division I Senior Game.
A forward from Dublin, Ireland, Naughton provided a spark for the Duke attack this fall. She ranked second on the team in points (29) and goals (12) and rounded out the season with at least one point in seven consecutive contests. Naughton logged three games with multiple goals, including a career-best six-point performance at No. 19 Old Dominion. She was also selected for All-ACC second team honors.
Paolino received All-South Region first team distinction as a rookie after surpassing former Blue Devil great Katie Grant for Duke's freshman assist record with 14. She concluded her freshman campaign ranked second in the ACC and fifth nationally at 0.70 assists per contest, and helped Duke rank third in the country in the category. Paolino was also tabbed to the ACC All-Tournament Team and was the only Blue Devil freshman to start every contest.
Steele collected first team accolades after guiding the Blue Devils to five shutouts and a 1.48 goals against average during her first season in goal. Also a member of the ACC All-Tournament Team, Steele was third in the ACC in both goals against average (1.39) and save percentage (.730). She was twice named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week and on Oct. 26 was selected the Longstreth/NFHCA Division I National Defensive Player of the Week.
Kristen was selected for all-region accolades for the second consecutive season as one of the Blue Devils' top offensive threats. She ranked second on the squad in assists (7) and fourth in points (21), topping the 20-point mark for the second-straight year. The Vancouver, British Columbia native helped Duke score 18 of its 67 goals for the season on penalty corners and notched the lone goal in a 1-0 BIG/ACC Cup victory over No. 6 Maryland Sept. 2.
