DURHAM, N.C.—Duke University sophomore Virginia Elena Carta will be recognized at the Duke football game versus Virginia Tech, Saturday, Nov. 5. Carta, the 2016 NCAA Individual Champion, will be honored during the first timeout of the fourth quarter for winning the Honda Sports Award for golf. Saturday's football game will kick at 3:30 p.m.
Carta claimed the NCAA Individual Championship in record fashion this past May with a 16-under-par, 272, on her way to winning by a NCAA-record eight strokes in May. Her 16-under-par and 72-hole total of 272 were both NCAA records as well. As a rookie, Carta totaled a 72.41 stroke average, which was the fifth-best in school history by a freshman. A product of Udine, Italy, Carta registered 13 rounds of even or under par to rank tied seventh on the Duke freshman record charts. She finished the season ranked ninth in the Golfweek listing and was a WGCA First Team All-America.
