RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Former Blue Devil Abby Johnston and current Duke senior Jaimee Gundry traveled to the site of the 2016 Olympic Games to compete in the FINA Diving World Cup. Johnston represented the United States in the individual and synchronized 3-meter springboard events while Gundry dove for her native country of South Africa on the platform.
Johnston first teamed with fellow American Laura Ryan in the women's 3-meter synchro competition. The duo totaled 294.00 points in Saturday's preliminary round to secure a spot in the final. In the final, Johnston and Ryan completed their list for an award of 294.90, good for eighth place. That put them just 3.24 points behind Germany in seventh, just missing qualifying the U.S. for an Olympic berth.
In Monday's individual 3-meter preliminaries, Johnston missed the cut of 18 divers advancing to the semifinals. She placed 18th with a score of 280.75.
Gundry was in action Saturday in the women's platform preliminaries. She rounded out her list with 245.80 points to finish 31st in the field.
