DURHAM, N.C. – Seven Duke student-athletes have earned bids to the 2016 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, scheduled for March 11-12 in Hoover, Ala. Slated to compete will be redshirt senior Karli Johonnot, seniors Olivia Anderson, Anima Banks and Megan Clark, junior Madeline Kopp, sophomore Maddy Price and freshman Kim Hallowes.
Johonnot is scheduled to compete Friday, March 11 in the pentathlon, along with Banks in the women's 800 semifinals. Banks will then join Kopp, Price and Hallowes, with Anderson as the alternate, in the women's distance medley relay to wrap up the first day of competition. Clark will take the stage Saturday, March 12 in the women's pole vault, along with Banks in the finals of the 800 if she qualifies.
Clark enters the pole vault competition as a clear title contender, winning the ACC title this past weekend with a meet-record height of 14-10.00 (4.52m), while also tying for the best mark in the country earlier this season with a vault of 15-1.00 (4.60m). Clark is one of just five women's pole vaulters in NCAA indoor history that has cleared the 15-foot barrier.
Johonnot was recently crowned the 2016 ACC pentathlon champion after totaling a score of 4,234 points last Thursday. The Las Vegas native is seeded seventh in the national field with a school-record point total of 4,304, recorded at the Tobacco Road Multis Jan. 22.
Banks is seeded fourth in the women's 800, setting the school record earlier this season with a time of 2:03.41. In the distance medley relay, Banks has run with Kopp, Price and Hallowes just once, as the squad posted a converted time of 11:04.27 at the UCS Invitational Feb. 20, the second-best time in Duke history and the 10th-fastest time in the field.
Clark, Kopp and Price will make their second consecutive trip to the national meet after qualifying last year. Clark claimed the silver medal and first team All-America honors in the women's pole vault, and Kopp and Price were part of the women's 4x400 squad that used a sixth-place finish to also garner first team All-America status. This year will also mark return years for both Banks and Johonnot, with Banks qualifying as part of the women's DMR team in 2013 and 2014 and Johonnot earning a spot in the women's high jump in 2014.
