LELAND, N.C. – The No. 20 Duke men's golf team came out scorching and put some distance between itself and the field on Sunday in the first day of competition at the Cape Fear National Intercollegiate, posting a team total of 568 (-8).
The Blue Devils lead the tournament by 14 strokes over second-place UNC Wilmington with 18 holes left to play.
“Our job is always to play the golf course the best we can, and our guys got off to a really great start this morning,” Duke head coach Jamie Green said. “We put some red numbers on the board quickly and it was a solid round in the morning. The wind was a factor in the afternoon round, and we did a solid job of hitting the shots we needed to hit.”
Sophomore Adam Wood and junior Max Greyserman paced Duke as they have for much of the season, both shooting 142 (-2) on Sunday to finish the day in a tie for third place. Wood shot 69 (-2) in the first round before following up with an afternoon 73 (+1), while Greyserman shot 68 (-4) in the morning and 74 (+2) in the afternoon.
Freshman Alex Smalley and junior Alexander Matlari weren't far behind Wood and Greyserman on Sunday, both carding scores of 143 (-1) to wrap up the day with shares of fifth place. Smalley shot 73-70 on Sunday, while Matlari checked in at 70-73.
All five scoring Duke players finished Sunday's competition within the top 10 spots on the leader board, as sophomore Jake Shuman shot 72-73 to finish the day in a tie for ninth place with a total of 145 (+1).
Playing as an individual, Duke junior Matt Oshrine is also in the hunt for the individual title after 36 holes. Oshrine shot 72-69 on Sunday to post a 36-hole total of 141 (-3). UNCW's Patrick Cover leads the race for the individual medal with a 36-hole total of 139 (-5).
“Matt put the ball in play off the tee today, which was a big factor in his success,” Green said. “He's a steady player overall, so it wasn't a surprise to see him play well and put himself into contention.”
Sophomore Ben Silverman finished the day in a tie for 44th place with a total of 156 (+12), while junior Andrew Bieber and freshman Shrish Dwivedi concluded Sunday in ties for 61st and 63rd with totals of 159 (+15) and 160 (+16), respectively.
“It's nice to have multiple guys in the top 10 and see them all have a shot,” Green said. “There's a lot of golf left and there are some birdies available on this course. The greens are excellent, and you can really pour in some putts. The guys are looking forward to that opportunity tomorrow.”
Monday's final round will commence at 8 a.m. ET with players going off both No. 1 and No. 10. Live scoring for the Cape Fear National Intercollegiate is available at golfstatresults.com.
