WILMINGTON, N.C. – Three players posted red numbers on Sunday and the No. 20 Duke men's golf team shot 280 (-8) in the first round of a rain-marred Seahawk Intercollegiate to take a one shot lead into the final day of competition at the Country Club of Landfall.
The Blue Devils will enter the final day of play with a one-shot lead on Army West Point and a six-shot advantage on tournament host UNC Wilmington.
“We didn't expect to get as much rain as we did, and I think most teams had only played four or five holes before we had to bring everyone in off the golf course,” Duke head coach Jamie Green said. “It's difficult to have to refocus and get back into your mindset when you have a delay, but our guys did a great job.”
Fresh off of a runner-up finish at the Cape Fear National Intercollegiate last week, junior Matt Oshrine continued his stellar play with a four-under 68 on Sunday. He finished the day in a tie for first place with Army's Marcus Plunkett on a crowded leader board on which only two strokes separates first and seventh places.
The performance was Oshrine's sixth round in the 60s and 10th at par or better on the season.
“Matt Oshrine played bogey-free golf today, and when you do that, you're always going to be competitive,” Green said. “He played some really good golf shots, made solid decisions on the course and was able to turn in a really good score.”
Sophomore Adam Wood and freshman Alex Smalley are both among the pack chasing Oshrine and Plunkett after each shooting 70 (-2) on Sunday. Sophomore Jake Shuman gave Duke four players in the top 20 at the midway point of the tournament, finishing Sunday's action in a tie for 17th place with an even-par total of 72.
“Adam Wood made a lot of birdies today, and I'm sure he would've liked to post a lower number but he's right there in the hunt,” Green said. “Alex Smalley got to one-under early in his round and maybe got a little frustrated because he hit some good iron shots and wasn't able to convert the putts. He did a good job grinding it out and putting himself in a place to compete for the win. Jake had a really clutch 72 because he had a tough start when we came back from delay. He didn't get frustrated and made some good golf shots, so we commend that round of 72.”
Junior Max Greyserman rounded out the Duke lineup with an 80 (+8) on Sunday, good for a share of 70th place.
Playing as an individual, sophomore Ben Silverman equaled his best round of the season with a two-under 70 on Sunday to head into the clubhouse with a share of seventh place. Freshman Shrish Dwivedi shot 73 (+1) to finish Sunday in a tie for 25th, while juniors Andrew Bieber and Alexander Matlari shot 74 (+2) and 75 (+3), respectively, to wrap up Sunday in ties for 36th and 40th.
“It looks like it's going to be pretty windy tomorrow, which is a big factor for golfers,” Green said. “Our guys are good in the wind and they make smart decisions. I know they're excited. When you have multiple guys under par and in the hunt, it's good for the team vibe. There's a lot of good energy around the team right now and the guys are having a great trip.”
Due to heavy rains on Sunday, the Seahawk Intercollegiate has been shortened from 54 to 36 holes. The final round of competition will get under way at 8 a.m. ET on Monday.
