DURHAM, N.C. – Duke sophomore
Azurá Stevens received Associated Press Honorable Mention All-America distinction Monday, following a vote of 32 women's basketball writers.
Stevens, who hails from Raleigh, N.C., averaged 18.9 points, 9.6 rebounds, 2.1 blocks, 1.6 assists and 1.3 steals on the season. Her 18.9 points ranked second in the ACC, while her 9.6 boards led the league. The 18.9 points per game average was tied for the seventh-highest scoring average in Duke history. Even though she missed seven games with a foot injury to close the regular season, she still led the ACC with 14 double-doubles.
Receiving Associated Press First Team honors were Breanna Stewart (UConn), A'ja Wilson (South Carolina), Moriah Jefferson (UConn), Kelsey Mitchell (Ohio State) and Rachel Banham (Minnesota). On the second team were Nina Davis (Baylor), Brianna Turner (Notre Dame), Tiffany Mitchell (South Carolina), Morgan Tuck (UConn) and Jamie Weisner (Oregon State). Rounding out the squad on the third team were Shatori Walker-Kimbrough (Maryland), Kelsey Plum (Washington), Brittney Martin (Oklahoma State), Jillian Alleyne (Oregon) and Aerial Powers (Michigan State).
After missing seven games, Stevens returned to the ACC Tournament and in two contests she led the field with a 12.5 rebounds average, while compiling averages of 16.5 points, 1.0 blocks and 1.0 steals. The 6-6 matchup nightmare was named to the All-ACC Tournament second team.
In ACC games only, Stevens totaled an ACC-best 20.4 points and 10.1 rebounds in nine contests. She registered five double-doubles in the nine league games. Stevens is also a Naismith, Wade Watch, USBWA and John R. Wooden Award candidate for National Player of the Year. She also earned All-ACC First Team accolades along with All-ACC Defensive Team honors.
