DURHAM, N.C. – Coming off last season's 8-5 campaign that included an overtime win over Indiana in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl, Duke kicked off spring football practice with a two-hour session on Saturday morning inside the Pascal Field House on campus.
“It was a good first day,” said David Cutcliffe, who enters his ninth season atop the Blue Devil gridiron program.
The Duke offense, under the direction of first-year offensive coordinator Zac Roper, is guided by rising redshirt junior quarterback Parker Boehme. Boehme, who played in 10 games last season while accounting for 760 total yards and seven touchdowns, opens spring practice as the starter as Thomas Sirk recovers from a ruptured Achilles tendon suffered last month. In 2015, Sirk threw for 2,625 yards and 16 touchdowns while rushing for 803 yards and eight scores and has one season of eligibility remaining.
“Parker is our starter,” Cutcliffe said. “At this time, we have no real way of knowing what Thomas' timetable will be. He's doing well but in every program, you have to know that your club coming out of spring is your ball club. Don't count on anything beyond that, so Parker is the starter.”
The Blue Devils return to the practice field on Monday morning.
Duke opens the 2016 season at home against N.C. Central on September 3. Season tickets may be purchased by calling the Duke Athletic Ticket Office at 919-681-BLUE or online at GoDuke.com/FootballTix.
